How do you store your planes?

Just make sure you don't have any humidity and subsequent rust problems. Thats my personal difficulty. Eoin

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

Alf, perfect deduction. I found Cosman a good start but I hope to be able to change his method to suit my technique as I progress. I'm saving the saw dust from the dovetail cutting in case of an emergency... Andy, that would have been the sound approach but I'm hell bent on using only glass on...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

OK, time to start the dovetails. When laid out like that, I'm always reminded of a set of antiquated surgeons wartime tools. I marked out the doves tails as per the mockup I had made. Still not a perfect proportion but better than I had before. I'd welcome comments on this point. I ganged up...

    Wood for a bench - advice ?

Would I be right in saying that oak is not a great option because of the reaction of its tannins with steel?

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

OK, my first WIP and my first full project, if I manage to complete it of course. I got a nearby shop to plane and thickness QS white oak for me. This gave me a problem as the stock turned out to be pretty poor in places so I had to revise my design to account for less wood. After much...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

So, no ideas then??? :D In the meantime I've started on the outer frame (with a changed layout) and I'll put up a few WIP photos over the next few days. However I've still not resolved my problem with the proposed glass door so any ideas would be appreciated.

    Tight Dovetails

I find that a file is very handy rather than paring down the pins. The grain can shift a chisel about in some timbers. Just be carful that the file doesn't cut a notch below your scribe line. Regards Eoin

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

Thanks guys for the help to date. I think with the absorbent crystals, a VCI capsule and impregnated liner should do the trick! For now anyhow. However, I have another problem I like some advice on. Firstly, the following is roughly what I had in mind. There will be a back to this of course. My...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

Ah ha... Zerust!!! Drawerliners and, as you proposed ALF, capsules. Might be the way to go. Eoin

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

ALF, of course. That makes the world of sense. How could I miss that? I'll have to consider another liner, or try for the pure wool one. Samharber, I must look a little more into that. Not sure if its what I'm looking for but maybe it could be adapted with a little thought. Richard, thanks...

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

Thanks for the replies so far. To be honest I'm not keen on any form of electrical approach. The tools are left unattended for weeks at a time so the fear of a fire and the resultant heart failure means I'd prefer a different approach. For those reasons I like idea of the absorbent crystals...

Time for a self challenge - new carving

I'm not sure if this is much help but I heard of a carver in Limerick getting blocks of Lime in Carlow somewhere. It may be the Lisnavagh timber project. http://www.irishwoods.com/index.htm Eoin

    Plane Cabinet - WIP!!!

I'm planning a cabinet to store my planes over the coming months and I have a number of questions. I'll start with one first. The primary purpose of this cabinet is to prevent rust. The planes are stored indoors but the house is very damp. I use various rust inhibitors but after a couple of...

    wooden business cards

I wonder would it be more efficient to glue a few sheets of veneer together. There would be much less waste anyway. Just a thought. Eoin

How would you price these doors?

A breakdown of the cost, if done reasonably well, is excellent when it comes to unforseen difficulties. You have shown what you priced, your rates per hour and then if any additional work arrises you can easily demonstrate how it wasn't priced and the rates at which you wish to be reimbursed...

How would you price these doors?

Too true BSM. Its certainly not a perfect proposal. Unless someone out there has found the perfect client...

    Project Advice - sliding dovetails

Hmmm, because its a project for 'me' I want to push the boat out a little to help develop my craft. I guess a dovetail on one side would be well worth considering as it would allow me to use a shoulder plane on the other side of the tail to make a fine fit adjustment. This would remove the...

    Project Advice - sliding dovetails

I wish to build cabinets for my tools over the coming months. I want to use sliding dovetails and i intend to make them with hand tools. How should I approach this? I was considering a hand saw and router plane. However, is it possible to make fine adjustments this way? I was also going to...

How would you price these doors?

Also... I've some experience pricing civil engineering projects and the best tool one can have is Excel. However, it should not only be used to price projects, but also to record their execution. This can't be emphasized enough. This allows one to assess their pricing method and very quickly...

How would you price these doors?

I find the following a very good price negotiation tactic. It will work in reverse as well. I'll try to explain. Situation 1, You are aware your price may be on the high side. Offer the price, say €10,000. Customer complains so you explain that it includes some particularly fancy components...
