Jet 260 Planer Thicknesser Problem - NOW FIXED!

I've been following this post with interest. I noted 'Jetman' offering assistance. Did he get back to you? I'm in the market for a quality PT and this forum will help me decide weather or not to splash the cash on a Hammer machine rather than a Jet one. Eoin

Klaus, just to repeat Woodsworth's question - do you sell these saws? Eoin

The problem with short cuts, was Planing stop for thin stock

I've tried the double sided tape and it wasn't a great success. The double sided tape left a sticky substance (funnily enough) on the veneer which was a ***** to remove. Plus it took some leverage to remove the veneer from the board below. It almost defeated the purpose of using the finishing...

The problem with short cuts, was Planing stop for thin stock

I saw David Charlesworth recommend super gluing a spot at the user end of thin stock to a board on the bench to allow it to be planed. Its the best idea I've found yet for 2/3/4mm veneers but it still feels clumsy. There must be a better method for this thickness of material. Eoin

    Tormek Skills

I've also got the Scheppach model. Also took me a while to get it right although it seemed to set up regular plane irons pretty well. My current problem is trying to get a shoulder plane iron to setup squarely. Because the iron gets narrow at the point where it should sit against the fence it...

    Garage workshop door

Would it be possible/practical to replace the door with a window that might be made more 'openable' to allow stuff in and out as well as light. Of course you may not want people to see all the valuable tools inside in case interest exceeds repect for the law... Just a thought.

Rust protection for my poor little no4!

Wax seems to be the best method as it dries on with a solid, slippery protective coating. I use briwax like some more here but for a really technical answer you could try Boeshield. Great product that applies a fine wax coat by aerosol. It was developed by Boeing for protection of aircraft...

Help! How to get my Startrite home?!

If its any help, I had to prepare a 16inch bandsaw for shipping before so I fastened it to a pallet. I used big coach screws (i think thats what those bolt sized screws are called) to fasten it through holes in the base. It made it very secure and easy to lift about with forks. However, 'With...

what makes a quality abrasive for metal?

I was lapping a few planes one time and the abrasive was getting clogged very quickly. I was working dry. The vacuum cleaner every 5 mins kept the sand paper refreshed.

Timber for drawer sides and backs?

Another option for re-sawing is to get a thicker piece of lumber and divide it three ways rather than two. That helps to reduce potential movement. Air dried wood is also a better option than Kiln Dried. Eoin

    drying cupboard

If you are to do that you'll need to also have a fan to circulate air from outside so as to remove the moisture. I was considering such a home made kiln myself it at one time but I packed it in when I considered the fire risk, the complexity (an electronic temp control would also be advisable)...

    Painting MDF bedroom units

Hey there scholar, in your third pic, at the bottom of your unit, there is an interesting looking tool. What is it? Is it part of something else? Or is it something 'blindingly' obvious that I should know already? Looks like a very tidy construction so far. Eoin

    Mortise and Tenon

Just another note on the Leigh! If you are looking to make through Tenons won't you be stuck with rounded M+T's. This is probably the same with any router contraption for M+T's - the Wood Rat etc. I know this is not generally a problem but the rounded tenon general looks manufactured rather...

    Felling a London Plane

Try to plank the timber to a single thickness. I think 50mm is a good option. The first time I did it I tried a few thicknesses to cover all bases and it made the stacking more difficult. Try to set up level 'supports' on the ground at about 450mm centres to keep the wood up off the wet...

    Importing from the US???

Ian, I've bought practically nothing here in Ireland. Crazy prices and sales people with a blind spot to reality. I get the best deals from the UK, especially when buying second hand. Last year I bought a new Record Bandsaw - BS500 - along with a nearly new drill press for less than...

    Writing desk WIP

Gasman, I've no experience with leather and you may well have considered the following but: When I was using Lino (I'm not sure why) in a similar situation (school computer desk top) I used the flexible floor glue to bond it to the MDF. I cut the Lino to fit perfectly and added a trim to...
