    Another Chessboard

spotted this as I have a chess table planned, but never realised there was an official table size, relative to the king. I was just going to make mine so it looked sort of right, but I question the 120 - 130% diagonal? The ratio of the diagonal to the side of any square is 1.41 (to 2 dp!), i.e...

    Victorian chair steps - WIP

Re the square section legs my guess (and seen in Pop Wood ages ago) would be to leave full section square stock each end as support, and maybe also leave full section in the middle too, removing that last. Then an mdf template and your Burgess. A 2-point guide is clamped to the left of blade so...

    Tool Passaround.

Had a closer look today, and used it (with considerable care). The choice of materials, overall styling and proportions, and the workmanship are all truly excellent, basically flawless. It has a nice mass, feels good to hold but still very controllable. Obviously it does what an awl should do -...

    fuming - revisited

catching up here! No I would not have thought to try cherry, but for the sake of a scrap why not. I know 3 days is ages, but I am in no rush at all on this (will be in a few months time... it's a commissioned wedding present) - but I was happy with the predictable rate of change. The table I had...

    fuming - revisited

Hi Mark - I'd say the change was unilateral, a bit darker and slight tonal change. I didn't notice that I would get one, then the other. But also 24 hrs was only slight, hardly worth it. Another thought is temperature may be a factor - not in releasing the vapour, but in accelerating the...

    fuming - revisited

yes Mark, good thread... but even they can't agree. What I do know is it works with cherry. I may try some chestnut and some elm. btw, the colour on the burr is unexpected. The oak piece goes darker, but heads towards the grey/green end of dark brown, whereas the burr goes darker but heads...

    fuming - revisited

This has been on threads before, but some time ago. I was first introduced to this at school by my old woodwork teacher (who was quite old-school then and that was back in the late 60s). I don't see it around much these days, but wanted to test it before considering using it for some components...

    Victorian chair steps - WIP

Excellent Andy - the step chair design is wondeful. Trying to look at the work progress but get distracted by the tools!! Jim has a Burgess 3 wheeler and he rates it very highly too. By the way, I really like the shaped square section legs on the pic of chair above...maybe?

    Tool Passaround.

Had to think about this. It's not 'Italian' at all. Turns out it's French... Bugatti Atlantic Type 57. Here's the proof: This will give a clue to pricing as the going rate for a Type 57 is about 1.25M euros. Better play carefully with it then. Report back on handling very soon.

    Tool Passaround.

The awl is now safely in my possession (collected from Jim's this afternoon). I've only had a quick look... very impressive indeed, impeccable i would say. The cocobolo is stunning, and the combination of ss (I assume?) and the wood is very attractive. Will examine and play with briefly...

Wadkin Time Warp Workshop - Kent

Sharp eyes there Matty - as said already, this site needs to be inspected very carefully, take loads of pics in vicinity of every machine (as parts are likely to be close to the respective) and label everything etc. I did notice quite a few parts just lying around... the odd fence etc! This...

    calling Chesterfield

Hi Dean - done, many thanks. I am waiting for seller to get back with weight so I can look at sensible shipping, but just in case!

Regency fluted leg - tricks please?

Many thanks for the pics woodwould - roughly what I imagined I need to make but it's good to see the detail. Also I plan to work away from the lathe so a bench-top box is my plan. And the one above Andy looks rather neat - I can rip those clamps on the Tsaw, and my long twin-screw vice would be...

    calling Chesterfield

Hello all... I have a slight problem. A fairly small item I acquired on ebay was listed free p&p on the summary listing, but says collection only on the main item page. Anyway I won it. Is there anyone in or very close to Chesterfield (Derbyshire) that might consider collecting on my behalf and...

Record 043 - Great plough indeed!

here's the 43 beside a 50. Makes the 43 look tiny, but the 43 does handle really well. The 50 has a depth adjuster locating in the side of blade. I think this depth adjuster is quite good, certainly better than the variant used on the 44 (a screw into slot under blade which wears then tends to...

Wadkin Time Warp Workshop - Kent

Bill, that is a phenominal lathe - any examples of the kinds of things being turned?? (not pics, just recollections). And we seem to have found the 'Wadkin axis' - it follows a straight line from Canada to Australia (hence missing the U.K. all together).

Record 043 - Great plough indeed!

agreed Trizza - I got one Saturday, and spent maybe an hour cleaning it, then sharpening all 3 blades, which is a really quick job. It's a real cracker - quite small so easy to control, simple to set up and set the depth of cut, and works incredibly well. If you had just one plough I think this...

    homemade bu plane

Very good achievement I reckon... I can't weld at all anyway. I guess the 15 degrees is to create a low-angle smoother? The blade grind looks closer to a scrub at the mo' though. i think it looks nice enough to justify another half hour getting the varnish off the tote (in particular) and making...

    MY 1986 model railway

Cor! Brings back memories... might be able to knock up a more modest variant 'for a grand-son' one day soon. Re ABC Cinema - I rather hope it's an Odeon, or better still a Gaumont. Very deco architecture.
