Felder / Hammer open day 16 June

Sorry, I don't know as I have never been to one, I think I will mail russell and report back. If he wants a good turnout give us the motivation

    Boring tools!

Good grief!! If you won't do a shop, have you considered a small specialist tool-hire business? (Another beauty of course.)

    bog oak

Interesting, i have been working some bog oak recently (not turning though) and I reckon it is a bit of a sod. Way more open than oak, and seems hyper-dry, almost crackly / dusty. Hard to describe, easy to see and feel. I suspect in turned components it could be burnished and the cellulose with...

    Boring tools!

I see a pinion, cast frame - a Yankee 155...egg-beater? Do you do open days? Or Play-School type events?

    Steve Jobs on making stuff

that would require explaining to me.

    Steve Jobs on making stuff

yes Greg - I have heard he was troublesome, and family life was 'untidy'. I look forward to the read though, I find obsessive people very interesting.

    Record 043 Replacement Parts

Jim - you have a future in stand-up. I'm sure four-balls would agree. (Four, not three).

    Steve Jobs on making stuff

I'm late coming to his biography but was just given a copy. I was flicking the pages for no real reason and the book opened itself here, p133 "From his father Jobs had learned that a hallmark of passionate craftsmanship is making sure that even the aspects that will remain hidden are done...

    Boring tools!

A fine collection there - the group shot looks like one from a shop I'd like to find. Do you happen to have a North Bros - I was looking a while ago, gave up for now but might try again some day, thin on the ground though, even in the U.S.

Felder / Hammer open day 16 June

Hi Custard - I understand there will be deals to be had but they are rather coy about it. How are your benches by the way? I need to make another!

Not looking like Russell's going to be rushed off his feet then.

    Record 043 Replacement Parts

Three capitalists and one communist makes four. That statement has no political intent, it's just plain counting.

    Record 043 Replacement Parts

Very nicely done indeed. Did I miss the bit about why you have 4? I like to have 2 of things, but....

    How are these feet made?

I suspect you would need to replace the lathe with patience! Make a round blank, rough-cut then finished fixed in a power drill with abrasives, then forstner for the recess? Or find a local mate with a lathe. I guess the grain wants to run along the axis, if you get me.

    Halfa Woodie

If that was over here Vann, I'd be needing that one  Just sell the 71 on, but the plane's a wee beaut. (Scots - 'wee' - seemed appropriate)

    Veritas Bench Chisels

They look very good indeed, and an excellent review too! I have a set of the LN (A2) so could just about justify these as 01... maybe. I know the Lies with hornbeam handles will take some real punishment and I guess the maple would too - the maple is far nicer looking... not sure I would want to...

    Halfa Woodie

stunning little plane, that is =D> Nice clear makers markings too. Wonder what the blade width is - is it more block plane width / size?

    'Moxon' add-on vices

Hi Mark, understand I think. The clearance between screws was set at 9" (imperial, that) and there is a compromise as the 2 legs need to fit within a typical bench-vice face. It's easy to make it longer / wider... and my main twin screw will take 22" between screws, but the main use of this for...

    'Moxon' add-on vices

I have been following the Stateside interest in these for quite some time, and decided to make a couple (the reason for 2 will follow). Basically the idea of raising the workpiece sometimes is useful I think, and a bench height is a compromise: lower to get over the work, higher to work into the...

    Plough handles?

Hi Mailee - i have quite a few nice bits left from a bench build - I tend to keep the oilier stuff for handles etc (I call it oily - it's the slightly darker, more dense, and maybe is heartwood, not sure). If you let me know length and cross-section I'll sort out 2 blanks ready for your lathe...
