    extractor for small shed

yes Mick - totally agree with 'fed up' ... I have a mid-size w'shop (400sq ft) and I have tried a number of solutions and am still not happy at all. Generally I believe the vac-style have brush motors and they are noisy. The chip extractors are big but have induction motors and they are quiet. I...

    The Mask Cabinet...WIP

as a gesture of goodwill  I shall return to my chess table with fluted legs very soon. I had paused to do other things but also to contemplate my options regarding 2 drawers, 2 side 'tables' for taken pieces... I was seeing a collision of parts meeting in a mess inside the carcase. I may...

there you go, like a London bus. Nothing, then suddenly two. How do I fix that??

    The Mask Cabinet...WIP

Rob - slow getting back, but I think you are right re work posted. The turners seem better at this but 'over here' it's all about sharpening etc and there was me thinking I needed a sharp edge in order to cut something. Keep posting work here please... over time the weight of content may swing...

Workshop Heaven - Continental Hand Stitched Rasp

not at all surprised James. Matthew is famous for service like that. Re 'value' I think your rasp does remarkably well. It is hand-stitched and that means that from initial forming the blank (forge) to final finishing must have taken at least 3 hours of true hand-work by skilled craftsmen. I...

    F W Reynolds bandsaw

Funny that Scouse... the thought did cross my mind, wonder if Scouse would collect it for me, he's just round the corner    Re guards there's a dilemma. It would certainly spoil the looks, but one day it's going to break a blade

    F W Reynolds bandsaw

Wonder if anyone here acquired this beauty? Went on ebay a few days ago at £112, and i was sorely tempted but it was North Wales. Would have gone nicely with the F W Reynolds morticer I have. if anyone has it, I would like to see more pics, and any idea of the original frame colour??

    'Moxon' add-on vices

Yes Richard, no two are quite the same. v4 has dovetail at front (an engineering aberration but still easily strong enough). v5 has a fatter dovetail at back again. Re thread depth xy, the hole for internal is bored 1 3/8, the round for thread external is turned 1 1/2, so thread depth can only...

    'Moxon' add-on vices

Getting common, these things. v5... has to be the last surely? I tend to raid the 'offcuts' pile for these, and fell upon a short board of lime. It dawned on me lime is much favoured by carvers partly because it behaves so well across the grain, and the screws are all cross-grain. I must say the...

Workshop Heaven - Continental Hand Stitched Rasp

Hi James, first off I will say I am a fan of Liogier rasps, and I have come to know Noel quite well. But I am not knowingly biased. I reckon the handle is of little consequence... Liogier only added handles a few years ago, before that they were sold like metal files, i.e. make your own. Main...

    Cute little hammer

Hi Klaus - hope all's well! Yes it's almost a copy of the Veritas one, just smaller. The handle is African blackwood as I had a bit lying around. I agree about small hammers but sometimes a well-targeted tap can be handy. I like the Philly one - very reasonable price indeed... good man.

66 1/2" router cutters... pile in!

me too Mick, got the drawer and door set a while ago. Really very good... but I mashed one half of the drawer-cutter pair on an ali fence very soon after #-o As long as Rutlands keep doing these sets at such a bargain price, I think they are too good to miss (for the general amateur / semi-pro...

    'Moxon' add-on vices

v4 now done, ready for a new home. Just made the screws a bit shorter as I saw no point having lots of capacity. This one will open to almost 4" which I think is more than enough and it becomes a little easier to store. I think I'll stop now.

    Cute little hammer

I like small hammers, and often tend to use them held very close to the head when adjusting things etc. So I knocked this up, just 4" long: I tend to hold the head or otherwise hold the whole thing a bit like a dart, and tap with the end. May have to make a bigger one now, to go with it.

    Contrasting woods to mahogany

Might I suggest sycamore - same visual effect as maple (a distant relative I believe). There's a very subtle warmth of tone in sycamore which works well with the warm tones of mahogany I think. And also think about ratios, not 50 / 50, so let the mahogany dominate, or the sycamore... the other...

66 1/2" router cutters... pile in!

Rutlands are doing it again - 66 pce router bit set, down to £120. I got the set last time and I think the quality is excellent. As a good quality general-use set with every profile you would probably need (except framing and raising panels) I recommend these very highly at this price... less...
