    which woods?

when everyone else zigs, then zag  i like them, sublime delicacy , underpinned by mass shaped well - pleases me. As was said, good we don't all like the same thing!

Help! Untreated Exterior Oak door suggested treatment?

I think this depends on the degree of exposure - aspect (north, south) weather protection from direct water etc. It also depends a bit what you started with - kiln dried will certainly expand no matter what. I agree generally, Danish oil has failed me in these applications, but I have been...

    Wood I.D - Confusing one!

Appears to me there are a number here happy to lose their wives (one each, don't mean polygamy) in a casual bet. Pine?, ebony? Should be home'n'dry, but otherwise might I suggest Loot, Gumtree or Freecycle

    swinging cradle

Ah yes, no clearance. Forgive me but it's really nicely designed and made... how the oversight? A shame to resort to coach-bolts I feel as it is a very nice piece. With a little hunting, some brass or bronze bar and bushes to fit. Bushes into cradle, bar through frame, fixed in some way but...

    Opinions needed re: old workbench

all agreed then, looks good. I don't like tool wells either, and a shallow one is probably more annoying than useful. You could easily resurface top with 12 or 15mm ply, fit a new face to the Record,(sorry Parkinson) and for a few quid another Record in tail position, then drill the 3/4 holes...

    swinging cradle

I have a cradle I got from a boat-builder in Oban. He's used brass rod, a brass knob and 2 marine brass eyelets: Quite easy to fabricate I think and parts are reasonable, also you can easily lift the boat/cradle off its hooks. Yacht chandlers would have the eyelets, the rest is ebay or...

A Graduation Present for My Wonderful God-daughter - Hannah

Excellent - very fond of burr elm, and keeping the organic shape for the lid complete with an easy lift is nicely thought out. The details are personal taste, and I was not sure about the raised holly pegs - like the idea and contrast but I might have cut them closer or flush... but I stress all...

    Startrite 352 - an overview

Tom here kindly got me an original brochure on the 352 - it's a fairly brief 4-pager but re the tensioner it says this: I need to have a play with it as mine is out of adjustment yet all works fine. And I see no mention of this lever in the manual at all. Not bothered about it, but would be...

Thanks for your help Andy. If it can be made to actually happen, I shall reveal all.

    sourcing tool handles

Andy - your 'library' again. =D> Yes indeed, might be more than I would enjoy making, rough guess is 50/month. I shall investigate. Many thanks. p.s. streetview image looks v promising, nice to know places like that survive.

    MY NEW WOODBURNER

I'd be interested in the installation, as I have a lovely old stove waiting to be fitted and have been put off by the cost of the flue, and the fact that the upper part of my workshop is timber. (Is that irrational, the whole place is full of wood anyway.) And, as for Custard's set-up...

    sourcing tool handles

An odd request for help please... if I wanted to purchase a quantity of good quality tool handles with ferrules (chisel handle say) does anyone know a UK supplier? I wonder if Sorby etc make their own or buy them in. Alternatively if anyone has production facilities to make quite a few, please...

How do you get your ideas from your head to completion

I know Sketch-up has many fans but I never got round to learning it properly (even have a tutorial e-book)... but I do have a fairly large blackboard in the workshop and that is excellent, as I can look at it (incl dimension numbers etc) from just about anywhere. And I thought a story stick was...

    Startrite 352 - an overview

Pete - I'm sure it is good, I just wanted to say that the basic standard is pretty good anyway. I may try the bearing mod one day (top only). I really rate the way the bottom guides get right under the exit of the cut. In fact, so far I feel the 352 was designed by people who actually used it...

Holdfast Group Buy - May have found a UK Blacksmith

One of my favourites Peter. I am fairly sure he is making the best benches in the World... but you need deep pockets for the big custom ones :( I'll be watching the store develop as he has a firm grip on that certain Englishness... I would question the point of doing Veritas as it is well...

    The UKW Infill Project

looking brilliant, a nice piece of burr, and generally that must be a good choice for this component, with short grain every-which-way. But the long tail (whatever it's called) looks a little risky to me. Academic as you won't be dropping it of course.
