    budget hole cutters

Brilliant everyone, many thanks. I am wary of the jigsaw route as one small error will write off a big desktop (and it looks to me those grommets don't give much margin for error either). But I hadn't thought of the router approach. Brian - pm sent.

    budget hole cutters

Please does anyone have any experience with low-cost hole cutters - i just need something to cut about 10 holes in desk-tops through 18mm birch ply - around 100mm dia to take cable grommets. Any advice appreciated... this is not my usual line of work

    SS GIFT VIEWING

sorry I am late here.. been a bit hectic. What must surely be the UKW book of the year (well, certainly for the hand-tool lot), along with the Taths Autumn 2012 newsletter. The Seaton book is amazing - the research that has gone into it, the drawings, everything. I really must go and see it...

    Startrite 352 bandsaw switch

Indeed, Lee there will help I'm sure - you can mail him at [email protected], or call 01634 850833 (I just happen to be a customer).

Bench Design - Please do a critique

Excellent bench indeed, Kinsella. If I was being picky I might question the low axis centre of the face vice screw - I would suspect some vertical racking, but see how it goes and let us all know. The real triumph is the low cost of really good materials. +1 from me for no tool tray. On that...

    Christmas comes early

Indeed Richard. I have a couple of Alfie's signatures on my chest at the moment, and they measure about 48mm. Cannot think of a gift so big that weighs so little (and I don't mean Alfie)

    biscuiting

Paul - off-thread I know, but I would be interested to see the 'undercarriage' for that table - the top looks very nicely solid. Wonder if it may be folding?

    What's your favourite wood?????

Stunning work Mignal, and well researched no doubt. Interesting woods being used also (that's the 'on-thread' bit  ). I would definitely like to know more. Did you find the bog oak a bit open-grain on the fingerboard?

    What's your favourite wood?????

Mignal - is that a flamenco guitar by any chance? I have a couple (a Conde of course, and an Esteve) and traditional back and sides is always cypress, although some now use Rosewood (known as negras, and less crisp but louder). I am not aware of cypress being used on any other acoustics...

    What's your favourite wood?????

I doubt there is a single answer - but beech is (to me) the engineer's wood. Ebonies can glow beautifully with no finish at all. Box is a definitive tool handle. Oak is what I prefer to make furniture from. English, quartered. They are all good aren't they? , and I include balsa - it must be...

    Christmas comes early

Have I missed something, mine is made and ready, but never saw a deadline to send. I just guessed, it needs to arrive before the Day. Too early may be too tempting. Was there ever a note re timelines Waka?

    Polishing glass edges

very timely, this. Just had a 250mm square, 3mm glass, 8mm bevel made (for a display box) - and I had exactly the same question. I would not let them grind the edges as I could not work with the rounded effect. I was guessing a finer diamond plate... about to give it a go (wet of course). I can...

    another lump of old iron

Mark - your comment about the patina - looks rust coloured but is smooth? Now let's talk tractors. A while ago I was collecting a Myford (like we do) and the seller had 5 Fergusons (before Massey). All in fine working fettle, but the one he loved most was (I think) a '37, petrol. And the engine...

    My latest commission

Hi Alan - looking very good of course, but I do have a small question... I don't get the feet shape relative to the overall design. It feels to me (the armoire) it has height, presence and some mass, but then I thought the feet look too small and don't answer to the style of the top. Don't get...

    Scottish Infill Smoother Restoration

sorry been away and quiet, but have to say this looks really lovely. From the 40 quid starter (which showed great promise anyway) you have made a right treat. Feel proud you have brought a (once) fine plane back into the 'highly desirable' category. =D> Was interested re Klaus's comments...

    biscuiting

There are some unknowns here I think, but generally I like to go about 250mm centres... however it depends a lot on many things - quality of mating surfaces to start with (the old rub-joint on boards for a table top relied entirely on good contact), degree of load the joined boards may be under...

    another lump of old iron

I am beginning to feel I would like to come and see your workshop - like your previous, under the crud it looks good and they were made so well anyway. As you know I loved what you did with the Wadkin... so just do that. Again.

    Little help needed

Someone will be along shortly with info for sure... could be Scouse, maybe AndyT, several others. It looks great, very clean original condition - a nice one. And you like your Millers Falls too... sound judgement I think.

    Victorian chair steps - WIP

Very well done Andy - and quite a library you have there. This build thread has been excellent - thanks for making the effort to record it along the way. [And yes Jim - Kefs indeed, recognise the bass unit a mile off (as Jim knows I once worked at Kef, many moons ago). And I suspect a B200 mid...
