    SS GIFT VIEWING 2013

Very impressive plane build - I had missed that thread originally, amazing work. I like the padauk as it darkens - I have a blank in the workshop and never knew what to do with it as it looks too cheerful for me when first cut, mellows very nicely though. I'll find a use for it now.

50 planes Mark? That's collecting. I may need to invite myself round when the new monster is installed (I'll stay well away til it's firmly in place of course). Look forward to pics etc anyway, a thing of beauty.

    Tyzack & Turner backsaw

Excelllent info, many thanks. The 1921 catalogue shows a huge range, and I note the extensive array of panel saws from 10" or 12" right up to 36". I don't really see any below about 20" around these days, but the shorter sizes would be great I think. I notice the option of London Spring steel...

    tuning handsaws

I've just started a thread on the Tyzack & Turner Mignal - with a few pics. I hadn't realised they went as late as the 80s Cheshire. It's a really fine saw I think, indeed quite heavy and a big change after the super-light newer saws. I only discovered that Gamages used to be a big tool supplier...

    Tyzack & Turner backsaw

I thought this may be of interest, a recent acquisition: It's 14", 12 tpi, and was surprisingly quite sharp when it arrived. Elsewhere Mignal mentions he has one, and comments on the weight. This one is a shade under a kilo, say 2lb. For comparison here it is alongside the Two Lawyers carcass...

David Stanley tool auction Friday 3 Jan

I should have gone, I knew it. Jim's fault. I did browse the catalogue but totally missed the taps/dies. If they were in reasonable nick that is a snip. And how much did the Moseley h&r set go for Andytat? Knowing how much Bill likes a nice axe, he must like you a LOT Richard. You recall the...

    New dt backsaw.

stunning work indeed, I imagine it has a nice weight. Is the stock for a dt saw taper ground normally? And what pitch tpi is it please (and how on earth did you cut and set the teeth)?

    tuning handsaws

Interesting Cheshire - I do come across some discussions regarding adjusting angles etc, but the question of slope (at all) is quite polarised I think. By 'accident' I found a US seller on eBay with a vintage Disston (around £148 as I write) - his descriptive copy includes him talking about his...

    SS GIFT VIEWING 2013

Just having another look through all the gifts. I wouldn't like to appear to be missing any out at all - but special mention also for Pete's knife kit (really interesting gift and we all like things with sharp edges); Morfa's excellent little shoulder plane; and Escudo's really lovely rebate...

    the gizmo competition

When moving the handle to the 90 degree mount (in body of vice) I discovered the internal thread may need a looking at anyway. So I'll be passing a tap through that anyway. Andy's thread is going to be v close, BBs original may look a tads deeper, but a quick pass with a die would surely tune it...

    A Medley of Moxons

Back again! Steve, following your comment I am actually considering doing a short run (6 maybe) soon. Re Cheshire, fair comment indeed but the latest ones I made had evolved to definite dimensions etc which I believe work for most: fits any 9" face vice, keeps max space between legs, enough...

    the gizmo competition

Wow, Andy!! Excellent work, very well reported at every stage too. Embarrassing as I am nowhere near making the brass mallet promised, better get a wiggle on (as they say). Soon as it arrives I will check fit and post a pic, if the thread needed a tweak it could only be very slight, looks...

    the gizmo competition

Funny you mention that Tom. It had genuinely crossed my mind there may be a place for them between front knob/boss and front jaw - thinner (maybe 1.5mm) hard leather. It would cushion the small axial play (end float) required to make the front face so it can rack, which is a key feature of...

    A Medley of Moxons

Sorry Fromey, missed this one with all the excitement elsewhere :) I don't think these will get as far as production, not by me at least. Basically they are too labour-intensive to make - there would be economies if I ever batch-produced them but I do them for fun once in a while - very odd...

    the gizmo competition

Very smart Prof!! - indeed the inner would need to be completed first (ideally only just perhaps). Not the taps/dies Jim, just an old 3/8 bsf bolt so I can check it fits. Bound to have one. There's humour in here somewhere - I must be crackers playing around with this thing (We forgot the...

    the gizmo competition

Thanks Tom K by the way. Very close that, but BB has the real thing. Checked thread but only have metric thread gauges and it comes out 1.25 (which equates to an M8 I believe, but of course it's not that). O/D is 0.374" (pretty well bang on 3/8ths). So BBs 3/8 BSF seems right - I don't mean it...

    Modifying woodies

CHAPTER THE THIRD: In which Kerry becomes Keira. Revisited this old woodie during the quiet period, and decided it's potentially too good to make into a scrub. So I decided to close the mouth down fairly tight, if I start a bit too tight I can open it a little later. I happened upon a woodie...

    SS GIFT VIEWING 2013

I missed that thread originally, outstanding work on the router plane. I notice the maker has aligned screw-slots on this one, but also Pete Ms solution to leave proud and remove slot head later would be nice too. The attention to detail adds to the overall impression. Very well done! Like the...

    Shooting with Stewart...Old Meets New

You mentioned the sound. I have become far more aware lately of the distinctly different sounds planes make. It was the Philly 55 degree blackwood smoother (you know them?) that started it. It's all tuned up and makes a kind of sweet crackle sound. That got me onto a few more woodies, including...
