Some interesting links there, thanks Richard. Ed

    COMPETITION...the end is nigh

Diversions into household projects for me mean that only an outbreak of swine flu causing a fortnight off work will see me finishing my project. In fact, as we stand I haven't even managed to start it yet... Ed

    Bosch 10.8V Li Scredriver/Drill/Impact drivers

I have the Makita set and its brilliant. I know a few others on here also have it. I suspect the Bosch and Makita are very similar. Karl is right that the impact drivers will not work all day on 4" screws, that said I used mine on a deck recently and was impressed how well it did driving 4"...

    Veritas LA block on offer

With a bevel up plane it will affect the cutting angle, so it depends what wood and type of work is at hand. The bed is 12 degrees, so if you want to end up with 45 degrees (the commonest angle of bench planes) then you would hone at 33 degrees or thereabout. Higher angles will suit difficult...

    Axminster Nuneaton

What does that mean Chas? Is there some special offer? Ed

    Veritas LA block on offer

Well, the bed angles are different... The low angle one was originally intended for 'blocking in' i.e. planing end grain, hence the name block plane I believe. A low angle is generally thought to be better for end grain, although this can be challenged in a number of cases. However, with both...

    How stable is MDF?

Mike Have you been in some sort of transmogrification experiment with Brad, along the lines of the film The Fly, because first he starts buying hand tools, now you're using MDF. I am highly suspicious... Ed

    Tool box/chest hardware

Thats a good call Jason, which I never even thought of, the search turns up some perfect stuff, quite cheap - thanks. Ed

    Tool box/chest hardware

No, nothing new, although that potential exists around the next corner for everyone in construction at the moment. Its something I've been meaning to make for a while, just finally getting round to it. What tipped me into getting it done, was that while doing the deck recently I must have made...

Anyone have problems with quality control on a LN plane?

Its coming to something when the only thing you can do to combat declining LN quality is to buy a Holtey! Not jealous at all.... Ed

    Thats the plan Ed

Do I REALLY need a smoothing plane?

For site work you only want to be carrying one plane. Personally I would go for a 5 1/2, although I see a lot of people carrying a 4 1/2 presumably because its a bit easier to fit in a toolbag. Agree with the comments on Record or Stanley for site use, my LN and LV planes are staying in the...

    Veritas LA block on offer

For anyone who didn't get an e-mail, Axminster have the Veritas LA Block on offer for £99.95 for a few days. I couldn't resist, so have ordered one with the tote and high front knob to make a mini smoother. Ed

First time fettler(now with second project)

Doug - nice one, I love the new tote and knob. Coupled with the Hock blade I'm sure its a fantastic plane Ed

    Plane Care

Where you do get the occasional rust patch I find the Garryflex abrasive pads (Axminster) an excellent way of getting back to clean metal without any damage. Ed

Anyone have problems with quality control on a LN plane?

I wondered the same thing when I first joined, but its an automatic thing depending on the number of posts, not some kind of self-agrandising labelling fashion! Ed

Which fixing? 3x3 post to a wall

Looks that way doesn't it...not trying to be an arse honestly. I have always known the type of fixing you describe as a Tapcon, this seems to be what they're called on all the construction sites I've worked on over the years. Ed EDIT - http://www.tapcon.com/

    Tool box/chest hardware

I'm just about to make a toolbox in the style of the traditional joiners suitcase type box, in birch ply, for my travelling joinery tools. I'm looking for the hardware - side handles, top handle, metal corners, latches etc.. and wondering if anyone has somewhere to recommend. I know Rutlands...
