    2009 Handtool Secret Santa

My pleasure Tom - glad to hear they get used and are working well for you. I have yet to make myself a set, as I gave away all the last lot...one for a rainy weekend I think. I've gone down a different avenue this year, ever in search of a learning experience, which it certainly was. Better...

    2009 Handtool Secret Santa

Finished. In fact, I like it so much its on the mantlepiece for me to gaze at for a week or two before posting. Ed

    LN chisel roll

I wouldn't bother as I find they make the chisels rust very quickly. I stopped using mine some years ago when I realised this fact. Ed

    2009 Handtool Secret Santa

Just a reminder - time is marching on, so for those making things you need to be on the case now really. Last posting for Royal Mail Standard Parcels is 15th December. Thats 4 weeks away! Info is here for other posting options; ftp://ftp.royalmail.com/Downloads/publi ... let_v1.pdf All things...

    bureau refurbishment

I've brought a few bits of veneered furniture back to life in the past, by using a palm sander and then refinishing. Providing you're careful it works OK. Personally I don't think the bureau looks that bad - I'm sure once the finish is off it'll be lighter in colour and if you refinish in...

    Japanese Chisel Hoops

I wonder if in the same way as I turn the occasional bit of wood on my metalworking lathe, you could turn the occasional bit of metal on your woodworking lathe? Presumably you have a chuck, so all you would need is a cross-slide mounted onto the bed and you'd be away. Of course it may be less...

    Plane Hammer

I remember reading that post at the time, interesting, but it just doesn't do it for me - I'm obviously some sort of hammer heathen! Ed

I'm a builder but if I bought a house I'd expect it to have a roof on. Ed

    Plane Hammer

I think I'd struggle a bit with the idea of paying a lot for a hammer with no handle though... Ed

    Oak shelves

Hmm, they look a bit like something I once made..... Only joking. I think they look great Matty and for what its worth I think (as others have said) that most of what we all make are variations on a theme and coincidences are bound to occur. In my major design project, in...

    Router Bit Breakage

After breaking about 4 bits in 2 days making some doors about 10 years ago I realised that 1/2" is the way to go. Better quality bits also help, but I bet virtually no-one has snapped a 1/2" bit, whereas most of us have snapped a 1/4" one (or ten) Ed

    Dionysus Desk(s) W I P. Completed

Excellent job Matty. I like the fact that you took the time to include some design features that are above and beyond the basic requirement, which starts to take the work into the higher bracket in my view. Conversely, I think you need to spend a bit more time on the photos to show the quality...

    Plane Hammer

I could write what I know about wooden planes on a post it note, but I tap the blade and thought that was what most people do. Obviously you have to strike the back of the plane to reduce the cut. I know you can hit the front of the plane to increase the cut, but it seems less precise that...

    Plane Hammer

I use one of these; which is not ideal, but works OK. For some time I've been planning to make one that is brass one end and wood the other, along the lines of the one Pete showed. Ed
  15. Mr Ed

    Plane Hammer

Well it is softish, but thats the idea - the face of the hammer gets dinged, not the top of the plane blade. Brass is not so soft that it will be wrecked after a few weeks. Ed

    Tools of the Decade

Well my saws are OK, so I don't really know what problems with saws you think need solving. We don't always need to be looking for the new new thing, improvements in tools are for the most part incremental not revolutionary like throwing all our saws away to swap to laser beams. Ed

    Tools of the Decade

So when will you be introducing your laser woodcutting system Nick? Ed

Another nice job in the making. You seem to have gone into productivity hyperdrive recently... Cheers, Ed

Drawer-Leaf Table Problem - Top Cupping!

I feel for you there Olly - if this was in your own house you'd just leave it a few weeks and see what happens, but a different game with paying customers. I think I'd be tempted to ask them to leave it in the open position for a few weeks and see if it goes back. The other option is to take...
