    eclipse guide, replacing wheel possible?

I have oen where the wheel is shaped like a threepenny bit (if you are old enough to remember them). Not sure how it happened - sticking bearing, I suppose - but it is certainly multi-faceted. I just bought another old one on Ebay for about a fiver. The advantage of the old ones over the...

Laminated Cofee table - Jason Heap

No idea, I'm afraid. I do know it took him a long time to perfect but, when I saw him at Cheltenhsm I didn't have the cheek to ask him how. Jim

Axminster - Be Aware of 2012 Prices

Regardless of whether you call it fluctuation or devaluation, the fact is that sterling has fallen significantly against the dollar and yuan over the last year. In a period when profits are squeezed by falling demand it is doubly hard for businsses like Axminster to absorb exchange rate driven...

    start of the new workshop

Something like Celotex will give you the best insulation value. Cavity wall insulation bats can sometimes be had at good prices if you shop around. Fibreglass roof insulation is probably cheapest but less efficient. Jim

    Domino users

Don't know if this has been mentioned here befor, but I stumbled across this supplementary manual http://www.waterfront-woods.com/festool/Domino_DF_500.pdf which others may find useful. Certainly beats the standard owners manual as far as Iam concerned. Jim

Advice on how to cut a chamfer on a chair back

I'm with the hand tool tribe for this. What no one has mentioned is that you will really enjoy doing it that way. Take your time and enjoy the absence of a screaming router and vac and the fear that inevitably comes with any high risk router activity and savour the quiet satisfaction to be...

Axminster - Be Aware of 2012 Prices

Alf is spot on. My first port of call is Axminster but, for more expensive items, I don't buy blindly from them. As someone else said, there are plenty of other firms who give good service and, perhaps surprisingly good deals can still be had with Dictum and Dieter Schmidt in Germany. Closer...

    Handrail

Shellac is OK, but not very durable in this sort of situation. I did mine with poluurethane many, many years ago and it still looks good. Jim

    Fruit cage - 2x2"?

I built mine from 2"x2" salvaged from the 1930s wooden garage that was here when we bought the house in the 70's. Must have been early 80's when I built it and it is still going strong. I just screwed the long side rails down into the uprights and half lapped the cross pieces into the side...

    Wadkin pillar drill resto

It's amazing the difference just picking out the name makes. It'll be a fab machine when you are done. Jim

    start of the new workshop

... and if you want to use it in the winter, plenty of insulation. If you are having a wooden floor, put some under that too, it's so much nicer to have warm feet. Jim

    Solid oak!

Oddly,I have heard that hollow trees are actually less likely to be blown down, alhtough they may perhaps be more likely to shed limbs. Really old oaks are usually hollow. Jim

    Paul Sellers a bit controversial

When I first read this I thought Alf's post was making two points - the spelling mistake, but firstly, being driven to distraction by the endless navel gazing over stone flatness. Amen to both as far as I am concerned. Jim

    A new one on me

I hate these things. They are not "air fresheners" they are air polluters. It is interesting that in some countries pumping chemical "fragrances" into the air in public places is actually illegal. This seems to me entirely sensible. Why would anyone want to breathe air which has been...

    Need help!

I agree with the earlier posts, best solution is to keep it in the room in which it will be laid. It's not clear whether or not the room has skirting boards. if it has, you will get a much nicer job if you take them off and trim back the architraves so that the flooring can run underneath...

    Routing brass?

Thanks everyone for the very helpful replies. What I wanted to do was make a deepish slot in the head of each of the blade clamping screws on my Veritas mark 2 honing guide so that I could fit flat cross pieces to allow them to be properly tightened without the aid of pliers. The need for this...

    workshop heaven

Now I think about it some more, I did have some problems with FF a few months back, although not with the WH site. A search of the FF support site suggested the solution was to uninstall FF and then reinstall it afresh. This does not lose your settings or bookmarks and completely solved the...

    Routing brass?

Anyone know whether it is possible to rout brass with a conventional TCT wood bit, perhaps with the speed reduced to the minimum and light cuts, please? Jim
