I was sent here from general woodwworking.......

Hi Phil, I could go into a long and detailed explanation of how to do it but I am sure Youtube is your real friend on this one. I have several books explaining how to fold up a bandsaw blade but still dould not master it. A 30 second Youtube video sorted me out in 30 seconds. I'm not saying...

Are all pva's the same ?

There is undoubtedly a lot of personal preference in glue choice, and rightly so because just about any quality glue that is suitable for furniture is more than strong enough. I have not found a problem with the shelf life of UF glues provided that some basic precautions are taken. The most...

Are all pva's the same ?

Me too. I particularly value the long open time, although I use Resinmite which is the same stuff but cheaper from AG Woodcare than Cascamit and is available in a 750g tub which I find the ideal size for me. Jim

    Not a flat world Record

Hi Pete, I can't tell you what a joy it was to see someone with a bench that is every bit as messy as mine. I know I should fight it but you have to accept who you are. At least my wife no longer regards the state of my bench as worthy of comment. Jim

Which oil finish for Oak worktop counter?

in such a high wear application I don't think I would consider any sort of oil finish. I know they can be refinished, but it wouls surely be better to use something really long lasting. I would be inclined to use some sort of counter top finish or Rustins Plastic Coating, which sounds horrid...

Advise on striping back old oak.

Hi Matt, Slightly off your question, but I think you might regret a wax finish on a dresser top. It would be fine on vertical surfaces but you might want to consider something more durable and resistant on any working surface. Jim

    Mitre guage sizes

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that but welcome to the forum anyway. At least, this post will bump your thread to the top where someone who knows may see it. Jim

water mark on waxed table top - HELP PLEASE

I'm no furniture finish restorer but I find it hard to see how you are going to repair this damage in a way that will be remotely near invisible. No doubt an expert restorer could do soemthing with it but that would cost and surely still be likely to become visible again with time and the...

    Steel strap for steam bending

I'm sure this is right, but galvanised mild steel is a lot cheaper and what I have used successfully without any staining of the wood. The point of the strap is to stop the wood on the outside of the curve from being stretched so that the inner surface is forced to compress instead. That means...

    Question for the domino users

You can certainly still buy the original. I am just making friends with mine using the the smallest (4mm) cutter. It'll do things you could never do with a Lamello. I do agree that slow and steady is definitely the way to go, especially with the smaller cutters. Jim

What a waste of a day!!!!

I actually think the European stuff looks so much nicer than the American, but have only ever used the latter. I have heard stories of the Euro variety having a tendency to wander all over the place with the slightest provocation. Is this rumour well founded? Jim

    Recommendations for small carving tools

If you have a good secondhand tool shop neaar you you could get some really good old carving tools for a lot less than new which would enable you to buy more for the same money. Jim

    forum users favourite tools: planes

Derek and Jim, Lovely work from both of you. I do admire people who have the patience, skill and motivation to make their own tools, especially to this standard. I'm afraid I do not. For me metal is horrible dirty scratchy stuff which I will work with when I have to but I would rather be...

Router table: Corian + Axminster lift

Useful stuff, Corian. I have a few sharpening stone sized blanks which I use with various grades of diamond paste to sharpen some super hard powder technology blades that my waterstones won't touch. The diamonds embed so it dishes very slowly but can be flattened with a coarse diamond plate. Jim

Axminster - Be Aware of 2012 Prices

I have no idea what CLK230's interest is but as a general principle I'm definitely with Douglas and Jake on the disclosure of interest point. The implication of a forum like this is that members expressing a view have an unbiased disinterested viewpoint when they make posts unless they disclose...
