I can only say I am filled with admiration for what you are doing here. It's going to look fantastic and be a real asset to your workshop. Jim

    Which Adhesive?

I'm not normally a Titebond for PVA man on grounds of price and my preference to buy from a UK maker, but it is certainly true that their technical support is excellent. I am currently making some chairs from steam bent laminations and have had excellent and very fast advice from Franklin in the...

Like clamps, you can never have too many block planes; I have only three which is definitely not enough. Jim

    Block Plane Indulgence ?

If I had a choice between the two LNs, I would go for a Veritas. Made by a company that believes in innovation rather than copying an old design (Stanley, albeit better made) whose products are all the better for it. The QS planes are excellent but they do nothing to move on the art of plane...

    Which Adhesive?

I agree with most of the comments. Hide glue for drawer dovetails cannot be bettered - if it is not quite square, just heat with a hot air gun and reclamp. Cascamite for complicated glue ups because of its long open time. Shelf life is not a problem if you buy it fresh which means from...

What happened with the Stanley Premium planes?

Quite agree, unlike Alf, some people seem to find it impossible to keep a sense of proportion and observe basic good manners. Moderators have a delicate line to follow but, regrettably those around here seem to have opted for the overly passive side of the line if my experience of being ignored...

ID - The THING from the garden....

While a mattock normally has a blade on each side, one narrower and at right angles to the other, I don't think this necessarily has to be the case. I would be surprised if there was not a forum devoted to agricultural and horticultural tools. Also, have you thought about trying TATHS (Tools...

What's your £20 to £30 must have tool?

Custard, Two things puzzle me: 1. The occasional new battery aside, why would anyone want a dial caliper for £20 - 30, when they could get a digital caliper which is far easier to read? 2. Why spend up to £30k on a combi machine with all the compromises and inconveniences that entails when...

What's your £20 to £30 must have tool?

I have had a digi caliper from the time they were £100 and wouldn't be without it. I aslo find the digi bevel box really useful. A lot depends on how you work. I like hand tools and find the French made TC edged cabinet scraper burnisher fro Workship Heaven absolutely brilliant. Jim

Pocket Hole, Buscuit or Dowel Joint

Yes, Dave is also right. I had intended to add that there is no one right answer and I wholeheartedly agree that design is a vitally important skill to acquire alongside the practical making skills. You will make plenty of mistakes along the way and also learn how to get round them. Just...

Pocket Hole, Buscuit or Dowel Joint

Welcome to the forum. A lot depends on your ambition. The fact that you have joined the forum and the tone of your post suggests you do have some. If that is the case, you need to use every project as a way to expand your woodworking skills, the very essence of which is joints. For me...

    Woodworking accessories - rant!

Most of it has been said, but perhaps not the nub of the problem. This is that it is impossible to make any sort of sensible money making things that compete with cheap Chinese imports, which many craft fair goods try to do. The inevitable outcome is that the makers end up working for next to...

    Transparent hide glue?

The nearest io have found is Cologne glue which is very pale. Used by musical instrument makers, I got mine mail order from Touchstone Tonewoods, In Reigate I think. Jim

    A2 Plane Iron Users

I too am surprised that anyone has difficulty sharpening the Quangsheng blades. I find the T10 steel takes and holds a better edge than what I consider to be the much inferior A2. So it's no contest so far as I am concerned. Jim

    A2 Plane Iron Users

Absolutely, Rob. My technique is quite differenr from yours, but so what. So far as the Blue Spruce is concerned, a paring chisel that needs to be sharpened at 35 deg sounds to me like a contradiction in terms. I sharpen my Japanese paring chisels at 25 and have no problems. Jim

    A2 Plane Iron Users

But my point is that some A2s will crumble when others don't when sharpened at exactly the same angle and with similar usage. Jim
