    Lighting- workshop

I had daylight fluorescent tubes, which emit less light than standard tubes, and replaced tham like for like with strip LED fittings which have turned out to be a bit brighter and fine for me. With regard to colour temperature I have to say I am a big fan of daylight and opted for 5000k...

West System, extensively used in the boat business and very reliable. Jim

    Steaming wood

Had a look for pics of the steam box but most of my woodworking pics seem to have gone awol on transfer to a new computer and the backup which should contain them doesn't. Really annoying. Jim

    Workbench design questions

My bench has the top rails on the end frames flush with the top of the legs. Each rail has a round vertical hole through it near the fron end and than four slotted holes spaced out along it with the last close to the back. Coach bolts (with large washers) pass through these holes and into...

    Workbench design questions

I have two benches, one commercial and one I made myself, neither have wide aprons and neither racks under pressure. A thick top, 4" legs and substantial rails, well jointed and good glues are all that is needed. Deep rails appeal to the belt and braces instincts in us, but the benefits of...

    Workbench design questions

Those wide aprons would be a big no no for me. I find it really useful to be able to clamp things down to the bench being able to use F clamps for this. I also like at least two rows of square, stepped dog holes along the front with trad wooden dogs and its easy to do with a router before you...

    Steaming wood

Agree about the need for insulation. The one I use is a piece of smooth stainless flue liner about 6" dia. packed around with loft insulation in a 12" square ply box with doors and decent rubber seals at each end, connected at the top door to a wall paper stripper. Also a 6mm drain tube...

Any thoughts on selling your items via Ebay?

eBay also take a cut of postal fees. I think it's outrageous but just factor that into my charges. Jim

    B&Q pine stripwood

Tiddles is dead right. I have had plenty of banana wood from diy sheds. You are much better off going to a timber or builder's merchant that sells lots of timber - their customers won't put up with rubbish. I know doing it this way is more intimidating than picking up a shrink wrapped bundle...

    Long Straight Edge options?

A joke, I know , but one of those won't take out a bow unless the opposite face is flat. I know a worshop that has a lovelyWadkin planer with 8' beds; now that would do it, but I wouldn't fancy putting my bench across it!

    Woodworking Youtubers

I rarely look at woodworking Youtubers so thought I would have a quick look at Foureyes and chose his Xbox stand. Nice design, but he cut the shelves leaning right across a guardless table saw. That was enough for me. These people are so dangerous for inexperienced amateurs - no wonder the US...

    Bandsaw Wander

I have had a couple of M42 blades snap on my Felder bandsaw (Italian, so not made by Felder, but still a quality machine). I am an amateur so the machine isn't used every day or even every week and the blades certainly did not last 5x the life of a carbon blade. I discussed this with Ian and...

    Wood for my next project

I have bought from W L West, but I now go to English Woodlands who have invested heavily in their business and are very well organised and customer friendly. I have had consistently good sycamore from them. Jim

    Wood for my next project

For a modern look the paler species work well. I have a soft spot for sycamore it's not as hard or heavy as maple and easier to work and doesn't have tp come from the other side of the world. I have never had any stability problems with it. The only real problem is that it has to be dried...

    Sawdust...

Saw dust is not a good idea on gardens. It requires a lot of nitrogen to decompose it which it will take from the soil at the expense of plants, for which it is a vital nutrient. My local tip is happy for me to dump it into the green waste, are you being refused because you have such large...

    Oak tannin stains?

Oxalic Acid crystals are widely available. AG Woodcare are vg in my experience Oxalic Acid Crystals. It may not work on all your staining but quite a bit of it looks like iron staining and oxalic is definitely the way to go for that. Jim
