    Garden hedge debate

Their house, their choice. It’s not as if they’re going to chuck old mattresses in the garden or start repairing cars on the verge.

    Box making hinges ...........

I’ve used these. The centre line of the hinge pin needs to be in line with the rear of the box to ensure it opens properly.

    Which Cable / Stud Finder??

Peter Millard uses a magnet to locate the nails in studs (or the line of plasterboard screws at the edge of the sheet, or presumably if lath and plaster the nails holding the laths to the stud). Not tried it myself though.

    Box making hinges ...........

To avoid any confusion, my wastrel comment was in relation to his mum.

    Box making hinges ...........

Son of Princess Margaret. Even by the standards of the royal family an egregious example of a parasitic wastrel.

I’ve used those too but IMHO the Gripit are better.

    Bookshelves on a plasterboard wall

I agree re the preferability of fixing to the sub structure. However, is this doable where the cavity wall is constructed using those slim steel ‘studs’?

    Bookshelves on a plasterboard wall

Of all the plasterboard fixings I’ve used, Gripit (from Screwfix) work well.

    Iroko exterior

The trick with Osmo is to apply it liberally and then wipe off the excess no more than 15 minutes later.

5p rubber washer to over £100 to replace

You could have tried these: https://www.tapmagician.co.uk/TMdefault.aspx They have a huge range of ceramic cartridges. I actually converted my rubber-washered shower valve to ceramic (much easier to operate) with no problem at all.

    Google earth street view

I don’t use google earth but google maps. I always thought street view was a function only of google maps and not earth, so I’ve just downloaded earth to have a look. Interestingly, yes it does have street view but the images of my street are at least 9 or 10 years old, compared with those on...

    Google earth street view

Should have added, the first item in the list is a map of the location of the postcode. Tap this and you are taken to google maps

    Google earth street view

When I stick in a postcode in the internet search bar it defaults to google. Change your default search engine to google and it should do this for you also.

    Coffee table for a nephew

I could have a workshop the size of Wales and still not come close to turning out work of Derek’s quality.

    Accoya for a front door

Whatever he decides to do about the door, he needs to make some kind of canopy above it to keep the worst of the weather off it

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Buckeye, that is beautiful work. What finish did you use? It sets off the oak perfectly.
