    Making a small boat door

Iroko should be ideal since it doesn't take up much moisture or expand to much. If you build in a 1mm gap between each board there is a fair chance you will have no problems. The ledges at top and bottom can be fastened by screwing and pelleting over. If you can manage it, opening up the rebates...

    Joints - expanding...

In spite of the fact that they have been around for many years, breadboard ends are not a happy mix with today's domestic heating and low humidity. If the moisture content of the top increases the ends will fall just a little short of the width, if the top dries the ends will project a little...

    Tolerances in woodwork

You should be able to get a good level of accuracy if the machinery is in good order and properly adjusted. There are however lots of things that can be out of adjustment and cause accuracy to drop to low levels. Let me suggest a few and doubtless others will be able to suggest more. On any...

Anyone near Cowbridge, South Wales have a P/T I can use?!

Although these are nice friendly ideas on first thought, they are riddled with problems in practical terms. If you allow an untrained person access to your machinery how will you ensure that both the machine and operator are not seriously damaged. How will your insurer view your idea ? How will...

    Wolf 'Locomotive' BS3 Belt Sander

That could be very elderly machine, I can remember them from the first joiners shop I worked at in 1959. It certainly looks as if it was built to last.

Elu routers - still a good buy, even now?

I think you have made the right decision.Purchasing second hand tools from a source that is unknown to you is a worrying idea since you may be dealing with an honest tradesman but equally may be buying stolen goods from one of the increasing number of thieving toe rags who are stealing tools.

Elu routers - still a good buy, even now?

No point in owning a piece of history, just buy the new tool and get on with woodworking.

newbie looking for kiln drying service on northeast

It may help if you describe the material you have, is it in the form of lengths of tree trunk still in the round ? If so it will need to be sawn into planks before drying. If by rounds you mean coin shaped pieces of oak cut from a trunk, then it will not be possible to dry them without...

    Kitchen Sink

I fitted a Franke and thought it was on the thin side, I fitted a ply bracket to th underside of the tap to ensure that it was reasonably firm. Mine had the multiple "teeth" type clips as well, they made fitting very quick and easy but terrifying to do, I will be avoiding that type of fitting...

Extraction, when to reduce the pipe diameter

The shorter that you keep the 40mm pipe the greater wil be the efficiency. It would be better in my opinion if you find a way of converting the saw outlet to 100mm and allowing the extractor to move plenty of air.

    TV sound question

Ive experienced similar problems with tv sound, the answer,or to be more accurate, partial answer, was a sound bar. This made an improvement in a fair percentage of programmes but not all, my problem relates to the insane practice of music being used at the same time as dialogue. This seems to...

    Garden Water Mill

I have looked a few times at the YouTube sites showing whirligigs, I'm more taken with the idea of a wheel about 600 mm diameter. Its habit forming this wheel building! Mike.

    Garden Water Mill

That looks really great, the planting sets the wheel off very well. It's noticeable that there is none of the green stuff on your wheel! That gives the fish theory more credibility, particularly since we both put the wheels into use at about the same time. I had planned to pressure wash the...

    Garden Water Mill

As you say the Iroko and teak will stand any amount of abuse but I think if I don't clean off the green growth from the wheel it will look a mess. You can't tell from the photo but I experimented with a string of solar powered lights round the front gable and a couple shining down through the...

    Garden Water Mill

I think the green growth on the wheel may be down to the fish (or rather the output from the fish) which is not a problem you will experience. Yes please I would like to see the wheel working. Mine has provided visitors with a smile or two, it sounds as if yours has its fans as well. Are you...

    Garden Water Mill

The only unexpected result I have noticed is that the water in the fish pond has stayed nice and clear this year rather than turning green as it has every other year. I've had the pond for well over twenty years and it's always had a fountain and filter in an attempt to keep it clear, it...

    Garden Water Mill

Just a shot of my garden watermill after a seasons use. running about 10 hours a day with the occasional drop of oil to keep the figures moving. The wheel is covered in a green alge and the iroko is looking a bit water marked where the water has splashed and dried out. Ive taken it in for the...

    Battening out under stairs.

A much used system is to fix the plasterboard to the bottom of the strings after fixing a suitable thickness of timber down the centre line by screwing into the back of the treads. In most cases a length of floorboard works out well. The centre support obviously needs to be level with the...

    Ammonia and Oak

I've fumed some oak to try the effect in the past. I used ammonia purchased from the local chemists shop and put a small tray in a plastic bag with the oak, the bag was left in the back of my van on a warm day for quite a short period. The result was a muddy brown colour which didn't seem to me...
