    Media coverage of the virus

Theres a long explanation of antivirals and vaccine candidates here: https://www.clinicaltrialsarena.com/ana ... cov-drugs/ My Autumn (not August) date was from interviews on Radio 4 with researchers and I think the medicines regulator, suggesting they could allow short cuts in the trials. One...

    Media coverage of the virus

Which ones are doubtful? I'd have to look around for the sources because I've not been noting them down. Number 1 is how all infections work if their infectivity (R number) is greater than 1. Coronavirus from memory is somewhere around 2.6, i.e. on average each infected person infects 2.6...

    Media coverage of the virus

Indeed, and that will be the really hard question! I read in today's Sunday Times (not a very reliable source, but this piece looks like straight reporting) that in China the restrictions around Wuhan have just been lifted. The outcome of that would tell us a lot if the Chines could be relied...

    Media coverage of the virus

The Times has carried some useful analysis on this question (along with other stories which are less well-researched), as did the most recent episode of Radio 4's More or Less (which for those who don't know focuses on numbers and statistics in the news). What I gather from that, and reading...

    Getting a Will witnessed

Fascinating though these exceptional cases are, I don't think we should fantasise such a disaster on Steve. If I recall correctly he either plans to cross the road to his neighbour's house (if so, remember the Green Cross Code, Steve!) or even safer, ask the neighbours to cross the road to him...

    Getting a Will witnessed

Just to come back to this (I was in a break from online teaching), I realise that I might be confusing everyone. One way of signing something is simply to write your name. There are other ways, such as the hieroglyphic symbol I squiggle. This is why witnesses usually are asked to print their...

    Getting a Will witnessed

I am sure. The witnesses must sign as witnessing it. A sub-heading like "Witnessed by:" would cover this.

    Getting a Will witnessed

One more thing Steve - wills aren't my specialist area (I cover technology law), and anyway as an academic I don't carry liability insurance! So once this is all over, get your codicil checked over by your solicitor and maybe re-done formally. I'm pretty sure that what you plan will work in an...

    Wood flooring refurb

If they have anything like T-Cut or metal polish to hand, get them to buff a tiny part by hand to see if it comes up shiny. If not, the finish will have been abraded off, and they'll need to sand back the whole thing and refinish.

    Getting a Will witnessed

Please don't follow most of the guesses which have been posted here! As it happens I am an authority on electronic signatures - my writings have been cited with approval by the Law Commission. And recently the Law Commission has been consulting a small expert group about changing the law on...

    Coronavirus

The need to do something fairly drastic was obvious, just from the statistics from China and Italy. In both those countries, the epicentres where hospitals were overwhelmed had death rates of nearly 10% of diagnosed cases, whilst elsewhere in those countries the rates were around 1% (source: The...

Building a Short Scale Stratocaster Type Guitar

Interesting that your rosewood is so close in density to maple. I was thinking "neck dive" too! I'm doing the opposite - a soprano-bodied ukulele with a concert scale neck (this is 15 inches instead of 13.65 inches), with the body in koa. If I build it right, the whole instrument will weigh...

    Coronavirus and Data Protection

There are two kinds of experts on data protection: 1. Those who protect organisations from breaking the law. They demand strict compliance, for obvious reasons. I think your neighbour is one of those. Data protection law does apply to individuals. 2. Experts like me (I was part of the...

    shellac for a beginner

Even blonde shellac adds some yellow/gold to light woods. On the other hand, its effects on darker woods can be spectacular. Here is a ukulele back which I finished using blonde shellac (and purple meths :D ): It's koa and ash, and the ash is clearly yellower. But the koa! BTW, this was...

    shellac for a beginner

The best I found was the Liberon Clear. But home-made is better, and for the same money you can buy 100g of shellac flakes via eBay and a bottles of meths from your local hardware store. Pour maybe 1/4 of your flakes into a jam jar, just cover with meths, lid on, shake, leave overnight. A...

    japanese saw.

I have a couple of dozuki saws, bought from Japan via eBay. They have Sandvik blades! Work nicely, I've not lost ant teeth although I work mainly hardwoods.

    Newbie buying wood

I think you'd struggle to get the top flat without buying a hand plane (and learning how to use it). At best, bought in PAR will be squarish  If I were making the table I'd make a frame from 2x2 timber, with lots of cross pieces, and then screw a piece of the heaviest plywood I could...

    Superglue Removal

I think (not certain but fairly sure) that CA glue doesn't bond chemically to PVC. Just a mechanical bond to surface imperfections. If so, it should flake off fairly easily - get a chisel corner under a bit and see. As someone's already said, it's brittle. CA also softens with quite low heat...

Seeking a nut for my dad's old tool

BA is the thread on 1920s Windsor banjos - I think it was a forum member who put me on the track of the 6BA machine screws I needed. Be reassured that all the wrong size screws I bought have been thrown into a jar without any labelling, thus preserving the bloke stereotype.

    Cascamite glue

Reliability should not be an issue with Aerolite. I've been 5,000 ft above the earth's surface in a wooden glider held together with the stuff. Admittedly I didn't glue it together myself, but Aerolite has a long enough history of not causing plummeting aircraft that I felt comfortable :D
