    Magic sponge for pencil marks

I have one on the end of my pencils and it works a treat.

    Newbie sourcing materials

Interesting, my local yard is cheaper than Wickes and tend to do discounts of 10-20% on everything if you buy more than a single sheet / batten. Also they will cut to size (sheet and timber) for free. Very useful for me as I can't fit an 8'x4' sheet in the car.

    What timber for front door?

I would echo this recommendation, it's an excellent book, covers almost everything you need to know.

Any PC builders, overclockers, enthusiasts out there?

We have Scan stuff at work, it's decent. I've bought a fair bit off then over the years personally as well and not had any issues, even when I had to send a full order of motherboard, memory, etc back because it all became faulty in the first few weeks. Don't skimp on the graphics card, and...

Cast Iron Bandsaw table no longer flat!

Cast iron is relatively soft, could it have been worn away?

    Easiest Blade and Chisel Sharpening

Depends how much you use them, years at least though, even for a frequent user. Paul Sellers reckons to get ten years out of his and they're being used for his woodworking school, so I would imagine a few decades for most of us.

    Easiest Blade and Chisel Sharpening

You can also pick up a big bar of green buffing compound on amazon for about a fiver, if you prefer a more solid format.

    Easiest Blade and Chisel Sharpening

I agree that people do take sharpening way too seriously, there's no point sharpening to a single molecule edge to them go and plane some spruce. My take is that you should get things sharp enough for the job in hand. If I can take a translucent shaving of the wood I'm using then why spend...

    Cordless drill conundrum

I have one, it's excellent. It's drilled through brick without issue and lasts for weeks at my level of usage. I have a pair of 5Ah batteries that it shares with the garden tools.

    Easiest Blade and Chisel Sharpening

I'm not sure I see the advantage of getting a plane iron very carefully sharpened such that you can finish with it as opposed to just using a scraper which does the job more easily and is simple to sharpen. Especially as a beginner there's going to be a lot of frustration failing to get the...

    Cordless drill conundrum

Consider a large battery - you get more driving power from big batteries than small. If you get a 4-5 Ah it should do a full day then you won't need two.

    Easiest Blade and Chisel Sharpening

I use three diamonds stones and a strop. It works fine. For rehabilitating ebay tools I use 60-120 grit paper on top of a stone then the diamond stones as usual. It seems to work.

    Fixing handrail brackets.

I have some Fischer UX8 plugs and they are excellent, they're a bit longer than the UX6, but they really hold.

    Holdfasts types and uses!

I might give them a go, ash seems like an obvious choice for these, the really, anything handy (and hardwood) would suffice.

    Holdfasts types and uses!

Indeed, pretty sure you could knock them together with a handsaw and have them work just fine.

    Material for Face Vise Jaws

Mine is lined with 12mm ply and 1mm leather on the outer jaw. I should probably reline it with something a bit stouter, but it does for now.

    Finish for a wooden work-bench

Mine is finished with Danish oil as that's what I had to hand. Anything similar like blo is fine imo.

Heat gun useful? Gluing in cold workshop and other stuff

I have pointed mine (not a Lidl one) at copper pipes and had a huge difference (20-30C) between the correct emissivity and the incorrect one.

Heat gun useful? Gluing in cold workshop and other stuff

Did you set the emissivity appropriately? They normally come preset to 0.95 (concrete / black paint) or 0.9 (red brick). Planed wood should be around 0.9.
