    Toothed Iron Making Experiment

Thanks Mike. The grooves are cut about half the depth of the iron - the photo is just misleading. The pics below show it better (taken after the grooves were cut but before heat treating etc.). D_W: Yes, I intend to use for planing difficult grain (mainly lutherie) rather than for preparing a...

    Toothed Iron Making Experiment

I have been playing at toothed iron making using this rather Heath Robinson apparatus. I used cable ties to attach a Dremel tool to a piece of MDF held in a vice. A cut-off disc was fitted to the Dremel. I was able to swing the table of my drill press near to the vice and use its cross vice...

A British Infill Plane made in Italy

Thanks. I have only made single thread adjusters up to now.

My latest wooden plane build, WiP

    Very neat. A tonewood offcut?

    Bronze casting infill plane WIP

The bevels look very good - well worth doing, I think. Definitely a good idea to do this without the infills in place.

A British Infill Plane made in Italy

Excellent work - a real pleasure to see. Please can you tell us what thread sizes are used in the adjuster?

    Bronze casting infill plane WIP

+1 to that. I have been using 1/4" x 32 TPI ME threads because I had taps and die of that size. That size works well but next time I intend to try 40 TPI, which is recommended in Jim Kingshot's book.

    Bronze casting infill plane WIP

It looks good to me from what I can see in the photo. If you decide to take any action I agree with what Pete has proposed.

    Bronze casting infill plane WIP

That's a very good looking lever cap. It deserves the very best for its inscription. I thoroughly recommend Ian at Chalco to do this for you.

    Greaves chisel steel ID please

I would say it is a firmer gouge for use with or without a mallet but not for turning. Greaves is a good make.

    Bronze casting infill plane WIP

More good progress. I think your adjuster will have very little backlash. What is the bronze like to saw and file, compared with brass?

    Inca bandsaw

The correct length is 73"" (~ 1854 mm). What is the smallest radius bend that that you will want to cut?

    Bronze casting infill plane WIP

Great progress - I'm enjoying following this WIP. When drilling the hole in the infill for the pivot tube it is very important to get it central. As drills tend to wander in wood owing to the grain and variable hardness I use a steel guide to prevent this from happening, as in the photo below.

Lateral adjuster - anyone got a spare?

+1 I have a Record 5 1/2 with an adjuster like that, bought about 1980. I have replaced the horrid pressed metal "Y" lever with a "solid" one.

mahogany tool box and chisel tray

Nice toolbox and good use of recycled wood.

    GoPro Hero 4 meets Richard....

I enjoyed that :) Whatever next? Camera attached to a brace?

The big day is almost here.

+1 A warm day is forecast in London :)

    Steel for plane body .

This idea came up in an earlier thread of mine: post783428.html#p783428 Jelly asked the question: “... Would it not be possible to just use a length of channel obviating the need to dovetail the sides?” rxh reply: “Your question about the use of channel is very interesting and I wonder if...

    A German Staircase

I had the pleasure of visiting friends in Berlin last weekend. They have two apartments, one above the other, that have been converted into a single dwelling by the addition of an interconnecting staircase in oak. Two things struck me about this staircase: 1) It appeared to be very well made...
