Thumping sound from new lathe... errr... help?

Feel for you. There's nothing like taking the shine off excitement of the shiny new kit than having these niggles. I agree this lathe is almost certainly going to be a return and replace. I can't see a gouge being bent in transit, but all mine are true straight. Only way is up from here. Phil

Thumping sound from new lathe... errr... help?

Hmm. My 1416 was as smooth as a sewing machine when I tensioned the belt with the weight of the motor. I guess the knocking is without a chuck on as you rounded 2 x 2 stock? Phil

How does a private vehicle sale work?

Good old Speedy's. He's aspiring to get a star in the food hygiene ratings, came close to getting one last inspection. :) Burgers still don't taste bad after a few pints in the Charlton though, so stars aren't everything.

How does a private vehicle sale work?

How does a private vehicle sale work?

And this statement from someone from a village where they still eat their young if the father isn't kept out the birthing room! You don't pull stunts in Shepton and win cus we're cleverer than you. Phil (Sheptonphil) may give you a clue.

    Switch off Windows 10 reminder??

Yes, the update process is much more reliable than 12 months ago, version 1511 is a decent stable release. I update several machines daily, I own a computer repair workshop with six repair bays. As long as the computer is running well on 7 or 8, there I now no real good reason not to, apart...

New turner: JET JWL-1221VS and other questions

Good idea to be abl to utilise the bench space like get, but you'll still have to try and mark four holes in the right position in the board if you mount it to a single board (one 18mm board will be better than two bits). Getting them exactly the right distance in each direction and square ain't...

New turner: JET JWL-1221VS and other questions

Well done, you'll have lot of fun. Before trying to bench mount it, read this post on marking the blind bolt holes. bench-mounting-an-axminster-at1628-or-at1416-t76081.html Phil.

    A couple of miniatures.

I don't usually comment on submissions, but the pair, especially the scalloped one, are quite striking. Lovely miniatures and very effective use of the silver. Phil

New turner: JET JWL-1221VS and other questions

I made the mistake of under buying in the first instance. I started on the 1416 and 18 months later sold it and bought the 1628. At least buying quality kit makes it very easy to sell without loosing too much, but there was still a deficit. You know you can fit the 1628 in if you shuffle...

Who is in and who is out?

The saddest part of a 92 page toxic topic splitting former allies in this forum is that if is extremely unlikely to ever happen. Cameron handed over the poison challis to ensure nobody ever pulls the trigger on invoking article 50. Boris et al would be damned if they didn't, and hung drawn and...

Who is in and who is out?

After Ms Sturgeon has given you independence, you of course will only be able to hang Scottish criminals, you wont be allowed to practice in England. Sorry, cross border agreements not in place. I therefore lay claim to the English position. If we make everything more serious than shoplifting a...

Who is in and who is out?

Guess we'd better get get the candles out in this part of the country now. French company EDF have been holding off making a decision about investing in the 14 billion pound Hinkley C nuclear power station. As it was also to be funded in part by the Fench government, who were dragging their...

New turner: JET JWL-1221VS and other questions

The Evolution is a breed apart from the sk. I have used the clubman range on the 1416 and 1628 Axminster lathes just fine. If anything I think the Evolution is an overkill chuck for the 1416. It really is considerably heavier than the SK. It is a superb piece of engineering but you will not do...

New turner: JET JWL-1221VS and other questions

I started with the Axminster 1416vs. What swung it for me as against the Jet, was the motor is a three phase induction motor through an inverter rather than a dc motor. Run off normal 13a plug. Better motor, quieter, more power torque at low revs. The build quality was superb. I made 13.5 inch...

    More sharpening woes

I have the full size Elsworth gouge with fully swept back wings and don't have a problem maintaining the edge with the extended long grind holder and jig. Belts seem to go on and on, I have only used the Sorby ones, and have only worn one 120 grit out in a year. It's the ease of swapping...

    More sharpening woes

I purchased th Pro Edge after going through the 6 and 8 inch white wheels, then the 10" slow wet system, found the constant truing of the wheel face a chore as turning gouge tools tended to groove the wheel too much after one use to then go straight to a wide flat blade like a plane. Went to...
