Clay on top of 100mm waste pipe OK?

Yes, I’m on Norfolk clay and had to use a different infill, I had loads of sharp sand left over from another job and some pea shingle which I mixed to use. The building inspector was happy anyway. Nice trench, there’s something very satisfying about a trench, especially when you can sit and...

Trench for water, electricty and waste

This is the standard for under a U.K. pavement, not sure if building control would insist on this for a home building, worth asking as they’ll want to inspect the drains.

PPE for turning - concerns over the PAPR masks

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. I’m think I’m going to have to wait until I can actually see/try them before making a decision. In the meantime I’ll stick with what I have, with warmer weather coming the misting should be less of an issue.

PPE for turning - concerns over the PAPR masks

I‘m not sure how comfortable I’d feel using someone’s PPE, you have no idea what or where it’s been used...although I guess they are designed to be cleaned so a thorough dismantling and washing and new filters would be fine, might give this some thought. My brother-in-law works for 3M and I had...

PPE for turning - concerns over the PAPR masks

Thanks, that’s useful to know there is an option to move the battery. I’ve tried a few local suppliers who will be open next week but many of them don‘t have stock or are unsure about whether you’ll be able to try PPE before buying. Whenever I cut MDF I always have some form of extraction on...

PPE for turning - concerns over the PAPR masks

Have you had any problems with misting up? My GVS mask has a central outlet and it tends to fog the visor (my workshop is not that warm).

PPE for turning - concerns over the PAPR masks

After much searching on the forum I ended up with a Honeywell Bionic face shield which is light and comfortable to use. However, after turning some ash for a morning I had a horrible taste in my mouth which obviously meant that I’ve been breathing in dust/fumes even though I’ve done no sanding...

    Filling large gap under skirting?

I solved the same problem in a similar way to DougB although I used 3mm plywood and cut a strip that fitted from the floor to the bottom of the skirting moulding. When painted you hardly noticed it. My only mistake was not leaving a gap at the bottom so you can slip a newspaper under for painting.

    What wood is this??

I‘m sure it’s Ash, I’m turning some at the moment and it’s exactly the same as your picture, pink shavings and all. I helped cut the tree down which made it easier to identify.

Saw comparison, bosch 8sjl vs bosch 800 sj

I have the sjl variant which is a good saw, it has slightly better dust handling than the sj, slightly wider cuts and slide out side supports which I use more than I thought. However, physically it’s a big saw and has a 1m depth footprint, I wouldn’t buy again simply for this reason, but if you...

    Dickies workwear

I’ll miss there Redhawk overalls, the only one I found that actually fitted me. Mind you the zips weren’t the best.

Has anyone built a Solar Panel Ground Mount in the UK?

The land is agricultural use so no way would you get planning permission for a building, perhaps a small stable if it was converted to equestrian use. However, the planners have already given permission for agricultural to solar farms in the area so a precedence has been set. I don’t want to...

Has anyone built a Solar Panel Ground Mount in the UK?

I'm looking at various options of installing Solar Panels. Unfortunately none of our roofs face South and the only usable one due to shading etc. is on the workshop which is West facing and not too large, looks like we can get 10 panels on easily or perhaps 12 panels at a squeeze. However, we...

Bandsaw guides - why is the rear one side mounted?

I always thought that the rear guide was there to protect the blade by stopping the teeth coming into contact with the side guides if you occasionally press too hard and shouldn’t be touching in normal use? So it could be you need more blade tension or to back off and cut more slowly or a...

    Straightening a ledge door

To finish off the story. The door didn't improve anymore but was good enough that a good latch would hold the doors shut. Here’s a shot of the final offset with the tension bar fitted, when I took the bar off to finish the door sprung back to the original offset. To match the existing doors I...

    Re-sharpen or buy new

They come back as good as new so it’s certainly the route I go down. However, I do have two blades so I can keep cutting whilst the other one is being sharpened.

    Broken riving knife bracket

That was exactly my though, the knife is there as a safety feature, the last thing you want is that flying towards you when you cut a springy board which try's to nip the blade. Another option maybe to make up your own metal bracket? Is a spare part not available?

    Quality?

If you decide to go down the crown route I purchased my last one from here, great prices and good customer service. Crown Cryogenic Bowl Gouges

    Broken riving knife bracket

You’ll have to get it welded in my view. Is it definitely cast as it looks almost like welded steel in the picture? It’s also slightly worrying that the blade has been in contact with it or was this just when it snapped?
