    ant nest eradication

I thought borax was banned in the U.K. and Europe some years ago so anything you buy is actually a borax substitute which may or may not have the desired effect.

    Wax?

I use IKEA candles, they sell bundles for only a few pounds. Rub one over the end grain covering as much as you can then use a heat gun to melt it so it flows into the grain. If you’re done a good job then the wax will go clear. You can also rub the candle again once the wood is hot to get a...

Getting glasses to fit over mask - which mask works ?

They do several versions depending on what filter you would like so here’s a picture of the style which will then allow the selection of the model with the filters you need.

Getting glasses to fit over mask - which mask works ?

I use a GVS half mask from screwfix with prescription glasses, never even thought about compatibility, just works. Comfortable mask too.

Is a double bevel mitre saw worth the extra

I’d second the slow running speed as a downside, my first mitre saw was an evolution and for the money its a fine saw but even with a good blade you can never get the finish of a saw running at nearly twice the speed. Mine was never total accurate either and I always had to check the blade and...

    Axminster Mini Lathe.

It could be a DC motor of unknown voltage so a bulb may not be a good test load? How many cables are there between the motor and the controller? Do you have access to an old analogue avo type meter as that would read closer to the average voltage output?

    Mobile phone update support confusion

Almost certainly from the day the phone is launched. It also seems that not all phones will get the update and after 2 years it may only be twice per year. A phone is safe until an exploit is found that is being exploited in the wild. Apple has released patches in a few weeks after major flaws...

First plywood satellite to be launched

Or we’re going to have to rely on Rustins 5 Star wood preserver and we know how that turned out last time. Plus I’ve heard that Mekon has nipped out to get an eye test despite being in isolation.

    Bowl Gouge Advice Sought

I‘ve been scouring eBay and the like for some used gouges but not much joy, or is it because I’m too tight to spend 80% of the cost of a new gouge on an old one that I haven’t seen? Do keep us posted though or how you get on.

First plywood satellite to be launched

ESA flying payloads on wooden satellite Sponsors for Woodsat include UPM Plywoodin Finland, among the largest plywood makers in the world. “The base material for plywood is birch, and we’re using basically just the same as you’d find in a hardware store or to make furniture,” explains Woodsat...

    Bowl Gouge Advice Sought

I only started turning during lockdown so not that experienced but the gouges that came with the lathe were crown and are good. I did buy another crown cryogenic bowl gouge and it does seem to keep it‘s edge longer, also good value (toolman.co.uk) compared to some others. It also has a slightly...

    Axminster Mini Lathe.

I’m not sure how old the lathe is now but if it’s less than 6 ish years old now I would go back to Axminster as not being fit for purpose under the sale of goods act. A product should work for what is considered a reasonable length of time, you could argue that a lathe should be expected to work...

Do I regrind a gouge or buy a new one for bottoming?

I do struggle with the transition from the side and then along the bottom to the centre, but on this particular bowl which is slightly deeper the shaft is definitely hitting the side, in the end I stoped the lathe, got a torch and tried to make the bevel rub all the way round and I couldn’t do...

    Vertical radiator on single stud?

If you want the full details see the white book. https://www.british-gypsum.com/~/media/Files/British-Gypsum/White-Book/White-Book-C02-Technical-performance.pdf Page 35. Has the fixing type and loading. Therefore you should be good for 12kg per fixing so 48kg if 4 fixings, I’d use the GeeFix...

Do I regrind a gouge or buy a new one for bottoming?

So what’s your go to size? I current have a 1/4, 3/8 and a 1/2 that came with the lathe (all crown). Never used the 1/4 and tend to prefer the 1/2 at least when roughing out.

    Record CL3 motor

I have the same CL3 lathe and learning to turn on it. I haven’t found changing the belt to be any issue at all, as kinverkid says, only needs changing a few times during a turn. Low at the beginning when out of balance, higher once balanced and then down again for sanding. I did swap the Allan...

Pads for chair legs on wooden floors.

I‘ve used these nylon guides for years and never had one come off. Suggest drilling a small pilot hole to ensure the leg doesn‘t split and goes in dead straight. https://www.toolstation.com/nylon-glide-nail/p60587

    Withdrawn Woodturning tools

I’m looking for some cheap turning tools in order to experiment and learn using different grinds, scraper shapes angles etc. and trying to work out what I actually need without ruining my existing tools. Anything considered but specifically looking for : Bowl Gouge: 3/8 or 1/2 Scraper: 1/2

Do I regrind a gouge or buy a new one for bottoming?

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and links, it seems that a second hand gouge is the way to go, I’ll keep an eye on Gumtree/eBay and try putting a post on the wanted section. I did wonder about trying an Ellsworth type grind on one gouge with a steeper 55 front angle but with my current skill...

Do I regrind a gouge or buy a new one for bottoming?

I think I need a bowl gouge with a steeper angle as I always struggle to get a decent finish on the transition from the sides and onto the bottom of a bowl particularly when the sides are steep. I’m fairly certain it’s because I can’t keep the bevel rubbing using my current gouges which are...
