    Wooden Workshop Base

The base of my 'shop uses lots of very heavy, 50mm thick concrete paving slabs arranged in a series of piers, onto which goes proper 'old skool' creosoted, genuine railway sleepers laid on their edge; the 'shop is built on top - Rob

    Making a Gandolfi camera

One of my ex-pupils made some of the last Gandolfi cameras before the business closed in 2017 and I recollect him saying a couple of years ago when I caught up with him that none of the original plans and templates were ever kept - Rob

    Rob Cosman's winding sticks

There's a chap on InstaG (Liam Rickaby) who only makes these things and can't get rid of them quick enough...and he charges more than Philly - Rob

    Carcase Cramping Jig...Part 2

Check that it's now square: Take of sharp corners and generally titivate: ...and finally glue and screw on a diagonal bracer: This jig should (fingers crossed) take all the angst out of cramping and gluing the sides true and square to the base of the new bookcase - Rob

    Carcase Cramping Jig...Part I

Noodling around the other evening on this new fangled t'interweb thingie, I came across Keith Thompson from Ax demonstrating the quite expensive :-" MTR-18 jig, one feature of which is the ability to bolt a couple of bits of angle 'iron' to it and turn it into an assembly jig. The next big...

Wood That Only BU Plane Can Deal With

As I recollect, Matt did with a Clifton No. 4 or 4.5, very tight mouth, very fine shaving, a York pitch frog and a bit of a back bevel on the iron...but he did still say it was a bit 'tricky' to plane - Rob

Wood That Only BU Plane Can Deal With

Those that have been around on UKW for a while will remember the notorious 'Wood from Hell' from a few years ago. Matt Platt at Workshop Heaven reckoned he could tame it, so I sent him a chunk around 200mm long and about 20mm thick. He did eventually manage to plane it reasonably well and sent...

    Diamond dresser

Nah...you don't need one of them. Matt at Workshop Heaven has just the very gizmo and you can even get a posh leather holder for it to hang on your on site tool belt :D - Rob

    Paul Sellers workbench

Yet another example of why it's just so useful to be able to cramp directly to the bench - Rob

    Paul Sellers workbench

Absolutely...pics below I think what we're discussing here Mike, are the differences between the traditional joiners bench, of which the OP has made such a cracking job and the traditional Emir cabinet makers bench which is what I modelled mine on, with some subtle improvements. I used one of...

    Veneer Storage

With small sizes like that I would keep them in their folders and store them under a bed in a coolish bedroom - Rob

    My mate Billy

It's horrible losing any animals. We had a pair of British Blue pedigree cats, mum and daughter and we lost both within three months of each other. SWIMBO is allergic to almost any animal dander and cats especially so we've been without moggies or any indoor pets for several years now. I do...

Digital Vernier calipers ~£3 on Amazon

Agreed, I think you'll get what you pay for....tat. I've just replaced mine from an old Chiwanese Ax one of dubious quality (the batteries seemed to last for all of 10 minutes) to a genuine, Japanese made Mitutoyo which had around £60 off when I bought it a while ago - Rob

    Advice Regarding Planer (Jointer)

It looks a pretty solid lump and I reckon it's fairly old with that exposed drive belt showing. I'd hazard a guess that it could be a Coronet of some sort? - Rob

    Stropping.

Yep, agree with all the comments. I just use a bit of thick leather glued to a lump of mdf, some of the green Veritas Honing Compound and a good dollop of Vaseline rubbed into the leather for a bit of lubrication. Works a treat - Rob

    Paul Sellers workbench

Nice job on the bench, looks a cracker, but why anyone would want to build in a front apron beats me. I know it's traditional, I know it will add a bit of mass and I know it will help to prevent the dreaded 'racking' etc (<which covers everything else) Wait though, until you need to use G or F...

    Extraction hose and cyclones.

I run my 'shop vac system from a Numatic NVD 750 with twin 1200W motors. The vacuum generated through the smaller hose is 'considerable' ; hence the reason why the collection bucket was collapsing. A PRV will take all of ten minutes to make; see Peter Parfitt's comments further down this...
