    No35 vice

Or I have a QR - not this one - with similar wear which still works fine ----- is everything in correct orientation? spring pressure OK? - needs this to hold the half-nut in place - can be adjusted if spring not broken

    Carbide question

Understand what you're saying, and fully aware of high MP of WC, but I think Tanglefoot's practical experience is relevant - maybe there's a 'braze-adhesion effect' at the tip or spot temperatures generated by friction are higher than expected and I don't know the curve, but of course alloy MP...

    Carbide question

Why not? - tungsten carbide tips on saws, drills etc are usually held on by a braze (ie copper based) - and 'tungsten carbide' is actually tiny particles of tungsten carbide in a matrix of cobalt or nickel

    Ventilation and Fan Placement

We don't have too many very hot days in this country, (but then neither did Vancouver, and look at them this year, or 'Arctic Siberia' on fire). but anyway we have some and maybe can expect many more in future years Much of UK housing stock was built 1820s-1920s with deep stone or brick walled...

    Carbide question

How long/how much work do these last for? The tungsten carbide will be far harder than the copper - maybe there's a chem reaction taking place - are you using a coolant? is this on a machine tool or a wood-type lathe? Most inserts also have 4, 6 or 8 cutting edges (or more with a circular...

    Rededa vice enquiry

I think it's very similar but not the same. There were two patents in 1877 which resulted in the vices sold under the J Syer and the Entwistle and Kenyon (Massey USA) names - both used racks and a short thread section, but had different actuation, this (and another in the 1930s by Woden) look...

Home Made Compressor, Would you buy it

careful a neighbour of my dad was killed by the shrapnel when his home-made compressor exploded - being used to drive a home-made log splitter

But so easy for you to alter with a short length of wood of thickness to your choice, temporary fix or v neatly. Other way round - start proud then wish it were flush is not so easy.

    Saw makers stamp identification

Dunno -- is it opera glasses/binoculars or maybe a cruet? - often the symbol was a play on words or related to the market. Was there a maker Binns?

    Rededa vice enquiry

This is a very interesting vice (if you're interested in quick release woodworking vices, which I am) - there were two patents for QR WW vices using a rack, similar to this but not the same, in the Bradford area in the 1870s. [It has the look of the Rededa, I think they started using that...

Is the opioid death toll a thing in all of western society?

Looks like this won't go away. After clamping down on the drug companies and certain physicians/pharmacies, opioid abuse and death was falling or at least flattening out quite fast in USA, but last year has seen a big rise in numbers again (fentanyl as well as prescription) - especially the...

    Parkinson 41a woodwork vises

Very interesting -- I'm a Parky vice enthusiast, but never seen this model - presumably made sometime between about 1920 and 1960 (bar slide, not solid cast slide) . nice find -- I see you're in W Yorks - the home of Parky - maybe these were a prototype not put into production --- a lot of...

    Canada 50C/120F

Are you ready for this? Not the Mojave or Sahara, but Canada, and northern Siberia has the same temp at present. Get ready for extensive fires. No doubt global warming. Even the much-despised experts who warned us cannot believe how high it went. Caused by us. What to do? (yes I know it...

    Marmite

Holy, holy, holy, lord --- --------- And while we have an open line why did you make marmite? was it the beer waste it's made from? (said with respect to all believers - if there is a God I'm sure she has a sense of humour).

    Marmite

fighting talk, Terry next you'll be praising beetroot and mayo sandwiches (many years ago I thought I'd invented these, but then found they were favourites in some parts of your country).

    Marmite

mdf does bend nicely tho (but unlike ash, usually when you don't want it to) back to the actual topic -- my passport says I'm English born and Yorkshire resident but I confess to preferring Vegemite - can't be Aussie tho as not a cricket or tennis fan and don't like my beer too cold - must be a...

The Warrington Chest. Patternmakers Tool Chest and Tools 1888.

thanks for your reply, Pete -- well it's kind of French-fitted (I couldn't think of another phrase -- there's a slot for each tool of chisel/driver/bradawl size or over, of a specific length, width and position - just wood, with no plush) but it doesn't quite do the full outline so I'll have to...

The Warrington Chest. Patternmakers Tool Chest and Tools 1888.

I have your book now -- part way through it - great joint effort. now -- CORRECTION (to my post, not your book) -- my memory failed me (mixed up two items) - after reading some of the description yours I went back to my pattern- makers chest and found a note to self -- this was a...

    Hide mallet care question

nice tools -- often available used and some only need a little fettling to be good agin I've also had the drying/curling hide end prob -- soaking in oil (sunflower, linseed etc) has to help - one I wedged in with an offcut of old shoe and then filed around the business end
