What tool did you buy today?

By the size of it it's clearly not for a "normal" milling machine, but for the massive gantry or tower type multi-axis mills of which the districts of Atlas and Brightside in Sheffield probably have the vast majority of the examples in the UK. When moving from one face to another on your...

    Faithfull Planes

There seems to be a lot of hate for the cheap far eastern planes going on here, but I actually think that CheshireChappie is bang on the money, if you treat them as a "build your own plane kit" they're Excellent Value! I have two faithfull planes, my experience has been that they're not...

What tool did you buy today?

Ooooh! That's a nice bit of kit. I popped into my local second-hand engineering tools store today got some milling cutters today, 1" depth 60° double angle cutter, 1⅝" face mill, 2" face mill, and had to restrain myself from buying a fly cutter the size of my arm (no joke, a 16" long body...

    Adding extra E-Stop buttons

I figured I didn't want to switch the earth, however I'd be dubious of removing the earthing as it's being put between the wall and the main switch, so removing earth removes the earthing of the motor (which has aa cast Alu casing). Should I be wiring it in after the main switchgear, so that...

    Adding extra E-Stop buttons

I've come by some spare "Mushroom" type emergency stop buttons, and was thinking of fitting them to my Planer-Thicknesser and new Grinder. Both have NVR protection in their switchgear, so in theory I can put the E-Stop between the mains and the Switchgear and all will work well. But, the stop...

Machine Moving (or the I've been a very naughty boy thread).

So it made it to the storage unit unharmed, I haven't fully re-assembled it yet, as I didn't take any tools with me this morning to drop it off. Getting the column back on the base was the straw that broke the Jelly's back however. After 3 days this week lifting stuff in the 40-80kg range...

What tool did you buy today?

Magnetic Chuck for recently acquired Grinder... It's a tad big, with 4" more length than travel on the bed of the Grinder, but I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it.

What tool did you buy today?

Technically I bought this last week, but just collected it. Surprised at how light it was, The Seller and I loaded it quite comfortably, as I'm on the way home currently (stopped for lunch) it remains to be seen if our lass is quite as comfortable unloading it with me... Soon I'll be...

New metal lathe cutting tools; solid or replaceable tips..?

Brilliant news that "proper" metalwork is coming back into schools, even if the budgets are a bit of a sticking point. I guess this is why we need more dedicated teachers who are passionate enough about their subject to dedicate brainpower and time well beyond their work time to make things...

Do you periodically clean your 3M respirator? You should!

It's the next step, of disassembly and thorough cleaning when you use it heavily and then periodically that's important. I semi-frequently have to wear a full face one for 4-6 hours whilst doing strenuous work... Result lots of sweat, condensation and saliva accumulate, and after use it needs to...

Do you periodically clean your 3M respirator? You should!

The guidelines I was given for respirator care are below: Inspect: Before Each Use. Clean with anti-bacterial wipes: weekly as a minimum. Disassemble, inspect valves and clean thoroughly: onece quarterly, after heavy use or after any period of prolonged storage. Replace Filters: when breathing...

    Bandsaw Resawing

In all seriousness, I would If I could (and will if I can). Steam-powered machines were my first real interest as a child, and you don't really grow out of it. It's interesting to note the feedback from owners of the little Hitachi online, conclusions seem to be it's underpowered as but does...

    Bandsaw Resawing

I've noticed a trend of threads on getting medium capacity "Prosumer" bandsaws and fitting the widest, coarsest toothed resaw blades available to allow the resawing of wide boards. By all accounts a good blade will give reasonable results. My question is this, is there room in the market for a...

Machine Moving (or the I've been a very naughty boy thread).

Thanks for the info wildman. It will suit my purposes for now (there was a much larger hydraulic surface grinder which went for £30 more than this, but it would have been much too big for me to cope with) I'm looking at a suitable magnetic chuck and digital readout... I suspect that whilst I...

Machine Moving (or the I've been a very naughty boy thread).

The seller is dismantling it in advance and I'm going down to collect with either van or Mondeo on Saturday. I still have a minor conundrum as to where it's going to go, I've asked Nottingham hackspace if they'd like to give it a home with their Bridgeport and Myford, if not I think I have a...

Machine Moving (or the I've been a very naughty boy thread).

If it was solid cast, in the region of 400KG, but I know from the seller its a hollow casting, so probably more like 250kg, I'm guessing the split is probably 50kg knee, 70Kg base, 100 Kg column, 20 kg motor.

Machine Moving (or the I've been a very naughty boy thread).

The machine is a tiny Trident, I believe it was originally a horizontal milling machine, and the original owner (a print shop using metal type) retrofitted bearings with superior tolerances and a grinding spindle. As I understand it the Base, Knee and Column can all be separated into pieces...

Machine Moving (or the I've been a very naughty boy thread).

As some of you know from threads in general metalworking, I'm currently developing the tools and experience required to make my own handsaws... In order to taper-grind the plates I got quotes from local firms for surface Grinding, and it was fairly pricey, so I started looking at other ways...

    Douglas Fir uses ?

Douglas Fir is one of my favorite timbers to work with, It's excellent for general joinery of all kinds, and has better durability than the normal commercially traded softwoods (slower grown imported material is regarded as either moderately durable, and home-grown is slightly durable... this is...
