    Morticer or pillar drill

You say you don't have the budget or room for both, but the morticer is £1800 and the drill is £1200, so get the drill and use the £600 saved and find a used morticer and make space. You can always find a place to put a morticer. Must be room in the bedroom to store it?

    Little wins....!

My little win, cycle related. I just reached 70 a couple of weeks ago and it is more and more difficult to maintain my average speed cycling. I was uploading my activity from my Garmin and checked my VO2 Max. That gave me a bit of encouragement!!

The cost of a microwave on standby

Most equipment should comply with the One Watt Initiative EC 1275 2008 which limits power on standby.

Ever wonder how they did computing before computers?

People kept telling me that time passes faster when you get older. I now believe it. It's all to do with the accelerating expansion of the universe.

The cost of a microwave on standby

That figure will not be correct for all microwaves. I just checked mine and it uses 89p a year on standby. Would I spend 10 seconds of my life turning it off then 10 seconds to turn it on again at my age for 89p a year? No effin way. 😁

    Is this a joke ?.

The tools carry the 'Made in Sheffield' logo, so I would expect the steel is processed in Sheffield. If that was the case, it would account for the higher price, but you would hope to have a corresponding increase in quality of the tools. I think it's great to see manufacturing return to the UK.

New here and have to give a shout to a turner

Welcome to the forum. You will get lots of really good advice here. I have a wood lathe and do some turning, not as much as I used to, but I still find it very relaxing. Would be nice to see pictures of things you make.

Ever wonder how they did computing before computers?

An ICL PDPP11!!!, Bloody luxury. When I were a lad we were so poor, I used to get up at 2am Cut down a tree , saw it up into logs, then using a blunt kitchen knife, carve all the bits to make an abacus. I worked for 20 hours in the local bank doing all the calculations for a farthing a week...

    Best purchase ever?

The house we live in for over 40 years. Has served us in so many ways. In the early days, friends and family visiting, then when the kids arrived it was a complete family home. A nice garden for the kids to play, watching them grown up. It was always the house where the kids friends gathered...

    RSJ column - replace

I would just get a good plasterer to convert your square pillar into a round one and add some fancy metalwork to make it look like a old metal support. It would be larger than you hope, but in 6 months time, you won't really be bothered. No structural engineer or planning permission required...

    And Here is the News

I am absolutely sick of listening to 'news' . Being half deaf is a great benefit to me It means if I don't focus on what's being said I can ignore the TV. All the news programs and discussion programs about the news each presenting some view based on political bias. It's a mental assault.

    First hedgehog already!

Probably quite tender after 20 minutes on the spit roast. Poor wee hedgehog, they do sometimes hibernate in really open places. I almost did the same to one hibernating in my compost heap. Time for you to build a hedgehog house perhaps? they will use it.
