Xmas gloat: I'll show you mine if you show me yours!

A lovely new Quangsheng V2 standard angle block plane from my son and daughter. Already had a quick play - produces shavings you can see through. Gorgeous. I'm a very lucky and grateful boy.

How to interpret vacuum pump specs /suitability for veneer ?

Around that price East Coast Fibreglass Supplies are worth a look. It's a more substantial pump and they do 2 sizes of vacuum bag tubing to fit any size of project you can imagine. I'm very happy with mine.

    Blanket box and Cupboard

What lovely contrasting timbers. In the first photo the top looks like it has a darker inlay around the inset panel, or is that just a trick of the light? What's the finish? It hasn't yellowed the ash.

Bookcase and base in English Oak - lots of WIP Piccies.

Thanks for the comments guys. Yep - shame about the drawer front, but it is far more apparant in the square on photo than it is in real life. That side of the drawer is only about 6" above floor level and from across the room is hidden behind the sofa (removed for the photos). By the time...

Bookcase and base in English Oak - lots of WIP Piccies.

We’ve been in need of a new bookcase for ages, so what better use for my supply of English Oak. I had meant to keep a full record with piccies but they are a bit spasmodic. Basic concept was for a 2 drawer base with traditional bookcase top in the same style as an existing unit we had bought...

Hal Taylor chair - Now rocking :)

Adam - I love it, and if that's your first piece of real furniture then you can tackle anything. I also like the use of contrasting timber - makes it very distinctive and makes it plain that this isn't a mass produced piece from eastern Europe. I particularly like those curved slats in the...

    Weather.

She had a "W" tattooed on each cheek. She wasn't much to look at, but when she bent over - "WoW" !

MOBILE BASE startrite 502e/big bandsaw-BAD FLOOR

Tomas - I have the 352E which is 125 kgs and have a similar problem with my garage floor. I use the Axminster wheel kit and just have a broad wedge that I kick under the highest steadying pad. I was tempted to do my own thing with the Axminster 100 mm wheels, but that would raise the table...

    Tess's Tale

Sounds like there's "life in the old dog yet". That's brilliant for such an old dog. Plenty of "joy" still in her life obviously. For me, that (or the lack of it) was the key decider. Let's hope that in her own time she'll "do her own thing" and you won't have to make the decision...

    Tess's Tale

This is such a difficult decision - I know, having had to make it a few years back on behalf of our much loved Cairn Terrier - "Angus" - at the age of 16. Having been full of fun and mischief in his youth, he settled into middle age well, but from age 12 onwards was on a steady decline...

    Oak Shelving Unit...DUN

Impeccable as usual Rob. I would be interested to learn how you tackled the curved fit between the top rails and the stiles. With the PolyX finish, do you just brush on? And when you wax over it, do you rub it down between the PolyX and wax, just denib it, or just wax straight on to the PolyX?

    This weeks Project.

Classic design. The raised rear is reminiscent of Victorian washstands that seem to have morphed in to hall tables these days. Nice grain to the drawers. So far as finish is concerned, personally I'm allergic to staining nice wood, but I guess it depends on what it needs to match and the...

    My new identity

I can't get into the site at all. Google can't find it, and even typing the full address in comes up with the "Oops can't find" message. :(

Britain's Trillion-Pound Horror Story (Ch. 4 last night)

I'm not going to be drawn in to the arguments above, but I think one of the most shocking things was that not a single one of the MPs questioned had the slightest notion about the size of the National Debt, and neither did they understand the difference between the budget deficit and the...

    propellers

I wouldn't be too keen to carve these up. I bet the value of a Spitfire prop in good condition is better than money in the bank. A guy on the Antiques Road Show last night had bought 2 oak supports from HMS Victory about 20 years ago for £25 each, and now they're worth about £5,000 ea as I recall.

    Making a Vacuum press

I've been looking towards making my own vacuum press as well. Whilst I'm considering using cauls and curved pressure bearers between G-Clamps at the moment, I can't help wondering whether for larger pieces - say 5ft x 2 ' 6" - this is going to be very hard work, and maybe difficult to get...

Possible to buy from Lee valley direct?

My son lives in San Francisco. An LV Jack accidently fell in to his luggage when he came home recently and he gave it to me as a gift. It cost him £154.

    Veneered external doors

Deafening silence! I wasn't going to respond, but what the hell! I am not qualified to judge whether RogerS's door is correctly designed or not, but my judgement is that his post was made in good faith. When I post my own meagre efforts I am happy to accept constructive criticism rather than...

Window hinge problem - what do I replace these with?

Brilliant. These look just the job. 18 opening windows x £8.95 = £161.10 . I like that solution much better than SWMBOs £10k one :D :D Thanks for the prompt reply Sim. Lardman - The existing hinges are 4" so should be a direct replacement which has its attractions, but in the...

Window hinge problem - what do I replace these with?

The hinges on some of our windows are rusting badly and making the windows stiff and difficult to open and close. Up until now I have cleaned them up when I paint the window, greased the pin, and they are then fine for a couple of years before they need doing again. However I'm getting a bit...
