OSB for cabinet, can you neatly joint this stuff?

A year or two ago I stayed in an auberge in France that had a whole sheet of OSB fixed to the wall and varnished as a "feature".Its no longer listed with booking.com......... For the OP's intended purpose I would choose far east ply or MDF as they will both take a coat of paint or emulsion to...

    Woodworking vice linings

Over the years I have used vices with jaws made from beech, iroko,MDF and birch play. They all worked.I never have found a use for the dog on the front jaw though, has anybody?

    Stanley vs. Norris

I wonder how many people are aware of the premium price that people had to pay for Norris planes when they were new and not subject to the whims of a collector driven market. In the seventies and early eighties I worked alongside an elderly cabinet maker who had bought his Norris A5 shortly after...

Thinking of buying a OX CNC kit

I will be watching this thread with great interest.I had a good look at the CNC machines at Newark and some impressed me more than others. If I progress along the path,I don't want a toy that slowly tickles a bit of dust of the workpiece and I don't want the cost of an industrial machine. The kit...

Perfect way to clean a water stone.

Actually, the seam filling mastic is there to allow movement of the deck planks with changes in moisture content.A tight joint on one day may well not be tight for long.In bygone times it was done with cotton or oakum caulking and hot pitch poured on top.

Perfect way to clean a water stone.

I have a friend who builds boats in the same area as the opinionated one and he is a pleasant fellow.I also have a water stone that works well.I don't live or work in Friesland and I do recognise that there is more to woodworking than making rectilinear furniture, even though I speak English.I do...

What did you do in your workshop today ?

I polished the bowl that I turned from the blank I bought at the Newark show.

    car boot find

I'd love such a gem.Even the basic compasses like the old Helix are changing hands for silly money on ebay now.I was told that it is no longer legal to sell the type that has long points and the current type has a fat stem with a very short point that is useless for scribing-or stabbing.I have a...

Diabetics feet! Who needs feet anyway...

I admire your fortitude in the face of such adversity.Thank you for helping to put our mundane concerns into their correct context.

What's your most used Chisel Size?

3/4 inch then 1/4 inch and once in a while a 1 1/2 inch paring chisel.I also highly recommend getting hold of at least one cranked chisel.

    The Apostrophiser

Clearly, the written humour isn't always discerned.I'm actually rather pleased that we seem to be as opposed to abuse of the language as we would be to abuse of our tools.

    Record-Marples 04 1/2 hybrid hand plane

I find that WD40 and wire wool is effective in removing rust. The bonus is that any excess helps to free up the moving parts.

    The Apostrophiser

When he has completed the current mission maybe he could get a cattle prod and use it on those people who believe "could of" has any place in written English.

    Bullnose planes

If I were to be limited to say three planes,my Stanley No90 would be one of them.I can't imagine trying to make very much without it.

Car boot finds (Plane info required!)

My daily user since the early seventies has been a Stanley No4 with plastic handles. It works brilliantly, although it has the excessive free play in the adjustment mechanism that you mention. The issue of non-wooden handles seems to come from a section of the woodworking world who cling to the...

    Which router bit?

I find the Axminster own brand cutters to be remarkably good value.

Some help on how to get this piece finsihed

Mark the trim line with a scribing block or similar.Cramp the central flat section to a bench and use a hand plane to remove the surplus,it should be safer and more accurate.

    Vintage Record Planes

I have the Record 04 that my father inherited from his father and it does feel slightly more high quality than a Stanley, and I have a few of those.Maybe its the age as it must date from the thirties or earlier.

Mounting a vice. Inside or outside the apron?

I have worked with both and made my current bench with the vice mounted on the face of the apron.I find the odd instance when a workpiece isn't totally flat on the back surface more than justifies the choice and would always choose this option.I suppose it depends on the type of work you intend...

    How's this for a pattern...

I can't really disagree with the sentiment.Taken further,we admire the look of burr walnut and the burr isn't so different from a wart.
