    ......

A decent jigsaw with the correct blade will do the job.Or you could find a tame sheet metal shop and walk in with your sheet and a bottle of beer.....

    BBC Countryfile - Chippendale

I wouldn't buy it.As much as I admire the skill of the makers,I find the style so elaborate that the amount of work involved in creating it borders on offensive to me.I much prefer the simpler aesthetics of the Shaker style for instance or Scandinavian designs from the last sixty or so years.

Poplar - Rubbish timber, what uses have you found for it ?

I have used both poplar and American Tulip Poplar. The European stuff was a 2metre X1 metre pallet I was given and it was OK for making laminating formers. The American Tulip Poplar was supplied by a local hardwood specialist when I asked for gelutong as they thought it was quite similar. It wasn't...

    an odd question

Its something I have done hundreds of times.A sawbench and a false table work perfectly well-a false fence is a refinement to ensure the sliver that would be on the blade side otherwise can't split away-a fine blade is a good idea to help the surface finish..The veneer is cut in the gap between...

    Any opinions on smart meters?

Call me cynical, but I was offered a "free" smart meter, only a week or two before the tariff went up 12.5%.I think I can guess how the "free" meters are paid for.

    Disaster Strikes!

If you can find a tame metalworker, brazing should be fine.If you have to pay a commercial rate for the job, probably not worth the expense. There are people who can weld cast iron with the correct filler rods and with pre-heating and they are not easy to find.

    Cookies - delete or not

I don't know about Safari as I run Linux and use Firefox, but I can and do refuse to accept third party cookies.I also frequently flush all cookies away and since I have the option to remember passwords, they remain stored. No ill effects so far.

Which adhesive for edging trim in a ships galley

I would use either moisture resistant PVA or one of the foaming polyurethanes.

How do I improve mitre accuracy?

All of the previous replies are correct as far as achieving accurate mitres is concerned.Should we be asking whether the original rectangle is equally accurate? To minimise waste, and mistakes,I would suggest adapting custard's approach to fitting individual pieces.Instead of making all the angles...

Jigsaw Blades - Straight Cut - Plywood (Hardwood)

Unless the saw is very badly worn,it simply shouldn't do that.If the base is fixed one variable is eliminated. The blade I would choose for 4cm thick timber would be a Bosch T101D and I would use a fair amount of the oscillation of the thrust rollers. If the saw doesn't have variable...

Routers & bits - when not in use

I have never seen humidity as low as 65% and for much of the year my workshop is at 100%-such is the reality of living a hundred yards from a river. My router cutters live in a block of wood drilled closely to the nominal shank size and see very little rust. The rods that the fence lives on are...

Jigsaw Blades - Straight Cut - Plywood (Hardwood)

Theres something very wrong with that situation. We need to know more to determine what it might be.Is the jigsaw a very basic version, rather than one that is made for serious professional use?Was the blade correctly selected for such thick material? Is there a detent to hold the base square to...

    Wooden hand plane advice?

Thats what my old woodwork teachers called a Technical Jack plane.Quite a handy tool;learn to use it and you will find a whole range of bargain planes falling within your grasp as so few people seem to bother learning to use wooden planes any more. They work brilliantly, especially on wetter wood...

Burgess BBS 20 bandsaw needs top and bottom guides

I had a BBS 20 and found it very useful.Three wheel saws can work well, but the very small wheels of the Burgess can quickly fatigue the blades if they are not of a very thin nature.I don't have pictures or a manual for the Burgess but I do remember the guides being square plastic and I don't...

    Can I cut perspex/plexiglass with a bandsaw?

You should have no problem whatsoever.Unless the plastic is exceptionally thin, you probably won't even need a special blade either. It may be worth sliding a plywood or mdf false table into place to eliminate the risk of chipping.Routing can get interesting as you can generate enough heat to fuse...
