    Crosscutting handsaw help required

Have you checked that the saw isn't twisted?I would normally expect the deviation from the line to be the same on both sides with a flat saw.

    Startrite 352 bandsaw

One point I haven't seen mentioned is whether the initial cutting involved using a fence.I have lost count of the number of people who imagine that using a fence on a bandsaw guarantees a parallel cut.Much more reliable to mark a straight line and cut to it -obviously while using a sharp blade.

    Could this be a vice...?

It could be incorporated into a vice.It may have been part of a press in a former life.Is it less work to turn it into a vice or to sell it and look for a Record 52 1/2 on ebay?

    Walker Turner Drill

That looks like the floor-standing version of the bench drill I have had for the last thirty years or so.I'm guessing they found their way over here in the forties and I suspect mine will last almost forever. The only issue I have is that the chuck speed is too fast in every pulley location,so I...

    Small Chinese Diesel Heaters

I spent a few years working in a building with air source heat pumps and the working temperature was always good.Maybe the Chinese will come up with a low cost version, you have to think that it could do a bit to relieve global warming. In the short term the low cost oil heaters have to be worth a...

Is Car S.O.S turning into Top Gear

I don't mind watching the car parts-pity about the amateur dramatics getting in the way.As for Top Gear I wouldn't know since I no longer watch it.I would be curious to know how the BBC income stream from it has changed in the last three years.

    Small Chinese Diesel Heaters

I would expect using red diesel or heating oil would be a fair bit cheaper than running your workshop heater on white diesel.Given the earlier reference to three days on a litre, even white diesel wouldn't be ruinous. This thread has certainly got me thinking as the workshop is unpleasantly cold...

    Plane recommendation for beginner

I may be a contrarian here but I would take a No 5 over a 5 1/2 any day.The extra weight of the wider plane might be considered useful for a bench plane but i have yet to see anybody able to take off half a dozen full width shavings with one. Then when the day eventually dawns when you have to...

    Startrite 18 - T - 10 Bandsaw

I have used the various saws I mentioned earlier and a couple of other Startrites since the early eighties.I currently have an 18-S-5 which is the same machine mechanically and it runs on a single phase supply. All these machines had a blade tension indicator that went to 1/2 inch and then...

How do you use your card scraper?

It depends. On the grain run,the access to the piece and where I'm standing.I think you need to be able to both push and pull and wouldn't condemn either.

Opinions please! - cladding a newel post

I'd do something like this but avoid the tricky stuff by using the L-section as a cover strip on the faces of the veneered MDF.It would increase the bulk of the newel a bit and the outer corners probably should be softened.

    Startrite 18 - T - 10 Bandsaw

For guidance I will relate this little tale.A company I used to work at had two 18-T-10's and a 24-T-10 and if they weren't behaving I used to get the call to go and take a look.Such a call happened and when I arrived in the workshop I was told that the blade kept jumping off the wheels.I...

    Startrite 18 - T - 10 Bandsaw

I don't think you ought to be using any blade wider than 1/2 inch . The reason being that the blade tension indicator only goes up to 1/2 inch and I suspect trying to achieve effective tension for a wider blade might risk distorting the frame of the saw.For what its worth I never found any jobs...

    Edge Sealing MDF

I'm pretty sure you meant P38 since P40 is the stuff with strands of glass in the mix.Similarly there is a mention in this thread of Halfords selling epoxy filler, when I'm fairly certain that the only fillers they sell are polyester based.Which is probably a good thing since polyester smells a...

    Paring chisels suggestions

I have several of different sizes, ages and manufacturer.the one I mostly use is a cranked 3/4" Henry Taylor and I recommend you consider such a thing. It will allow you to work on flat surfaces as well as doing anything a straight chisel will do.

    Advice on brads req.

After reading this thread I can see how Americans must be baffled after learning all these esoteric terms-not to mention describing nails in penny terms-to find a set of metric drawings.Never mind the truth that if they pick a 4X2 from a rack it will be a good bit smaller than that.It goes a bit...

    True poor man bench.

I have seen and indeed worked on many benches that were a great deal worse in use and appearance. The weight will be a great benefit.

Best method of making accurate bevels.

If you make the former to suit the other side of the job you still need to support it for the other operation.I would go with the former as planned and after cleaning up the first side,I would stick some wide masking tape to the perfect surface and then cut some ply or MDF formers to a good...

Best method of making accurate bevels.

Sanding will get the job done ................................................................................ eventually.I have the choice of using any of a number of curved planes and spokeshaves, together with a few shaped scrapers. You would be well advised to organise firm support for the...
