    Resaw blade advice

Agree, I wouldn’t have paid the new price but was lucky to get one at a good deal. May just be placebo effect but does feel like it’s cutting better. I drop the tension at the end of every day so it gets used everytime I use the saw, and it’ll see me out. In the luxury tools category fo sure

    Resaw blade advice

After years of wanting one I picked up a tension gauge for my bandsaws. It’s surprising how much you need to crank to get even narrow blades to the right psi. If you go for an m42 blade they’re a much thicker gauge and need even more tension. Pretty sure tuffsaws sell a thinner gauge carbon...

This puts the Virus into the shadows

Nuclear disaster would be a point in time event relatively geographically contained. Fossil fuel derived climate change is adversely impacting large parts of the world. Neither will lead to an extinction level event but environmentally nuclear is less impactful. Edited as looked up stat “The...

This puts the Virus into the shadows

Nuclear is such an emotive subject, but every form of power generation has its detractors. I’m pretty pro nuclear - but it needs heavy investment to deliver effectively. All the way from mining the ore, enriching it, harnessing the energy, through to waste disposal and ultimate decommissioning.

    Excel

Control key + F is the search in excel, works well. Excel won’t struggle with that size at all. All in one sheet would work best. As you get used to it you could add a pivot table to give you some stats from it if so inclined

    Welder advice

When learning, worth sawing through the practice piece weld and etching it to see if you’re getting penetration.

Not a Plumber so WTF is going on

+1 to condensate pipe. Once it freezes it backs up. There’s a drain on the boiler that can be used to empty it out.

    Welder advice

My evening welding course was cut short by covid, I’d finished the stick part and was about to move on to mig. I picked stick to do first as it’s a good way to learn the basics and get good, the switch to mig is supposed to then be pretty straight forward. I need to get round to buying a welder...

leather sheath for small serrated saw, how to protect stitches from teeth

veg tanned leather is normally fine so long as kept dry. Chrome tanned leather isn’t recommended for sheaths as it can cause corrosion. Hence why recycled leathers aren’t always suitable. As has been said, a welt is the typical approach to stop the edge slicing the stitching.

    Startrite 352s grinding

I have solid guides on my startrite and like them. Planning a deep service soon and will face then off smooth again, but set close to the blade they work well. Can’t see why you’d change them.

Rowney Purified Linseed Oil... What have I gone and done?!?

Linseed oil is a nice finish, takes a while to cure so wipe on and remove any excess. I use it on tool handles and after years of giving them a top up every now and then they have a really nice finish on them. If you can cope with the drying time, and the yellowing of pale woods, linseed oil is...

Which heat gun for stripping paint?

I’ve got the Dewalt and had no issues, they’re simple things. So long as they don’t overheat and cutout can’t see what would make a “bad” one.

New logo or lets house the homeless veterans

I’m surprised that they weren’t able to get the work done probono as a tax write off from an agency or by crowd sourcing it. I agree to an extent with paying charity workers market wage to ensure efficient and skilful management, this sort of endeavour generally indicates someone out of their...

    Anvil Prices - What's Happened?

I’m glad I got my two reasonably. There has been a big resurgence, plus the US doesn’t have the same heritage we do so they get shipped over by the container load due to higher prices other side of pond. Sad in a way we’re losing them

first drillpress looking at one from screwfix

Regarding rack and pinion letting you wind up and down in the same alignment- usually unlocking it to allow up and down movement also unlocks the left to right movement, so in practice you still need to reposition carefully after any adjustment

first drillpress looking at one from screwfix

Worth looking for vintage, but don’t stress too much, they’re simple things.

    Kitchens

Mostly it just seasons through use, the more you use it the better it gets. Mine are from Alex Pole Ironwork, they get them handspun in the UK and then forge and river on the handles. A bit spendy but great to use. At least one of them gets used everyday. The smallest is perfect for a fried...
