    what width Marking Knife?

When I make them I usually go with 10mm as find it easier. To some extent personal preference but larger ones feel a bit more cumbersome to me.

    guillotine blades?

Is there anyway if knowing the grade of steel used? When you say tungsten blades it makes me think they may be tungsten carbide- a great material but hard to reprocess. If they’re a high tungsten HSS then could be interesting to repurpose. Great offer though

If it were me a 6mm hss endmill would cost less than £5 and work better than a forstner bit

How to make this handle slot?

That’s a bit carp, as it’s a really good tutorial by a really good maker. I’ve flagged to the site admins if there’s a way of making it more accessible. Whilst there may be a bit of upfront cost it does become pretty economical too, but for a one off depends if you can get smaller quantities...

    Forstner bit and aluminium

I think the outer lips will struggle to cut in deep enough to get the main cutting edge to engage. If the cutter engages and the drill is going slow enough it would work for a hole or two I’d imagine. Aluminium drills nicely enough with a touch of lube - either specific drilling compound or a...

Making a homemade forge, does anyone have any reccomendations for a suitable blowtorch?

That’s a lot of volume to be heating with a torch, how big was the knife? Do you have a back and a way of closing down the front?

How to make this handle slot?

Have done a few of these and each time wished I was using a slitting saw to make the groove. It’s doable with careful hand sawing and a thin chisel, but you’ll inevitably have a gap right at the end of the slot. Using a dark wood like ebony will make the filler less conspicuous as you can tint...

Here are two threads where Tim Gunn goes into some details: https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/37754-another-gas-forge-and-burner-pic-heavy/ https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/52505-gas-torch-as-a-burner/?tab=comments#comment-559301

Amal make good burners for small forges, I use one in mine. Sadly a lot of the information on how to put them together was an old forum that is now lost.

    Gumtree Query

It’s a scam by setting up a website with a url that has gumtree in the name but is nothing to do with them. I imagine it all looks official and that you’ll get money after item has been collected to make sure the item is real and protect the buyer. Then someone takes your stuff and you never get...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Single bevel marking knife with a copper bolster attached with peined over pins, boxwood handle and carbon fibre pins. Textured front part of bolster and a nice visual illusion with the polished blade Polishing the copper and sanding the carbon fibre pins without staining the box was more of...

Nice I’ve had these on the wish list for a while but not been able to justify them. Good to hear they’re worth keeping in the list.

    tru oil vs peacock oil

I found tru oil to be more like a wiping varnish than an oil finish, can start to be a bit plasticcy but does give a resilient finish. Interested in thoughts on peacock oil
