    Softer metals on diamond stone

It’s more that the diamonds will stick in the softer material and get pulled out of the plate shortening the lifespan of the plate significantly

    Ziricote fretboard finish

Interested in what you find works. I’ve used osmo on Ziricote and been disappointed by the near complete loss of figure

    Brumock/billhook handle

Haha, perfectionist in me would replace that ratty handle with a new one out of Ash

    Brumock/billhook handle

If you don’t want to replace the handle the crack is the main thing to deal with as it’ll flex open and shut. If it pinches your palm in the process you’ll know about it. Rather than duct tape, a binding of string soaked in glue is a way of wrapping the crack which both holds it together and...

Braze or solder broken cast iron plane sides?

If you made the missing piece from brass too and then brazed it on it would show the old vs the new in an honest way rather than look like a crack full of braze. Would have a higher chance of success and look good too

    Thread tapping.

Being mild steel it doesn’t have the carbon in it to harden, but the heat may distort the threads. So leave as is. Take your time with the tapping, use tapping fluid and back out regularly. A drill press does help to start it square as described above. Mild is nicer to tap than a lot of other...

    Making a Burger spatula

Bit more progress in the odd 30min gaps over the weekend. Started the bending progress First bend added Split a block of wood from the box of random pieces accrued over the years Quick skim with a plane to smooth off, seems like a rosewood of some description. Will be adding some g10 lines...

    Making a Burger spatula

Yeah 310 stainless. Would be fun to do one from Ti but would be inordinately expensive unless I get lucky with an eBay offcut

    Making a Burger spatula

With summer approaching and smash burgers being all the rage, I was asked to make another burger spatula, so thought I’d post some pics of the making process Outline sketched Blade tension set with a lucky find on eBay of a Starrett tension gauge and speed set using the pulleys round the...

Close call and a lucky escape....

Lucky escape as the extractor will be fanning the flames with fresh air. I keep a powder extractor in the shop- and in that instance would have probably drilled a whole into the bucket to fit the nozzle and then dumped the contents in. Planning the dust extractor design to help get it out of the...

    Bench plane ramblings

Nicer than a Bailey with a stock iron, but vs a Bailey with an upgraded iron the only difference was in how it felt. The thicker irons do make me glad I have a linisher to quickly grind the bulk of the steel away allowing a small microbevel to be quickly added on a fine stone.

    Bench plane ramblings

Having mostly used Stanley Bailey pattern planes I’ve branched out a bit of late to scratch an itch. In getting hold of a few other planes I’ve also tried a few new blades. I much prefer the Bailey adjuster to a Norris style, but the Norris style does seem to have less backlash. A victor...

    Bench Grinder upgrade

TR Maker does a similar design, 118 blades in UK are a supplier. people have made homebrew versions using the slides from a knackered mitre saw. accuracy wise if you’re knife making it doesn’t need to be at the engineering level, unless you’re planning to make super high grade folders. I’ve...

High carbon or alloyed steel in small quantities?

Ground flat stock is who I use. Decent enough prices and reasonable shipping what are you trying to make?

    Ironwood?

Greenheart is also called ironwood sometimes, and comes in fairly large sections https://www.wood-database.com/greenheart/
