    The moon

I’ve pretty much stopped trying to reason with most conspiracists and instead engage in upping the ante instead - faked moon landing -> oh so your one of those people that believes in the moon Anti mask- oh you believe those government spread rumours to hide the fact it messes with their facial...

Most Useful Discovery for Online Woodworkers EVER EVER EVER

    Elm slabs valuation £?

That’s cheaper than I pay for timber. I’ve recently paid about double that but for quarter sawn boards with one wany edge. So less wastage but not 50%.

Hacks to help cope with the heat

My advice would be to not have a greenhouse delivered and then have to spend 3 days outside putting it together in a place you’ve intentionally picked to not be shaded. Have drunk about 8l of water a day and still feel dehydrated

Should I fancy a fancy wood burner for work and play?

I have the solostove linked. It gives a good burn off timber, slightly Smokey whilst it gets up to temp but then belts out the heat. Not sure how leaves etc would fair in it. Small sticks and upwards would be fine and when it’s going is nice to sit and stare at with a drink of an evening...

    Sandpaper

This is a useful guide. The type of abrasive grain influences its use- mostly for wood you want alox A lot of wet and dry is SiC, but I find the newer zirconia papers cut steel quicker and for longer with hand sanding, and ceramic belts are great for powered grinding...

    Removing Ercol 'Golden Dawn' finish

This was the Golden Ercol finish that I was able to refinish by careful sanding and scraping. Take your time and I found regularly wiping over with solvent on a rag (I had IPA to hand) helped with tracking progress and cleaning out the pores. Table top will be nicer to do as big and flat. I...

Anyone tried this dowel maker from AliExpress?

Principle seems sound, is a small cutter so would need a blank roughed to pretty close to size to work quickly. The vids show something that’s very close to size already. I’d also expect a fairly coarse finish so depends on final purpose. For the price I’m tempted, especially if it’s a standard...

"Well, I woke up this mornin'..."

Congrats,I found it was a mix of feelings of achievement and relief. We’ve stayed in a modest terrace whilst friends have “climbed the ladder”. Now whilst their mortgages have grown ours has been repaid and I feel a lot more free not having to think about making the monthly payment. Gave...

    Help please

The Ercol pieces I’ve refinished have been scraped and sanded. A finely set plane could be used if surfaces are very dinged up, but sounds like you aren’t that experienced and so there’s a learning curve that would need time to go through. There’s a lot of difference between a b&q cheapy sander...

    Finish for changing room benches.

I’d osmo them as won’t flake and easy to top up when needed. Cures to a dry finish so don’t have to worry about any transfer to clothing etc

    16amp circuit

I use H07RNF for loose flex, is much nicer than arctic particularly in a workshop. Worth shopping around for as price per metre varies wildly and often cheaper to buy slightly more than you need to get the reduced unit price. All my sockets are wired with individual cores in trunking specced by...
