    PM-V11 or A2 blades.

Word on the street is that PMV is the same as cpm154 which is itself an analogue of rwl34 Steels get named by the company that makes them and then some vendors rebrand to make them special Like zwilling make steels out of sg2 which they call 5000MCD which is also the same as R2 It’s funny...

    PM-V11 or A2 blades.

A2 is an air hardening steel- what the A stands for, and while having the same amount of carbon has more alloying elements. These alloying elements lead to carbide formation which in turn is intended to increase edge retention by resisting wear. PMV is a powder metallurgy steel - what the pm...

    Eh?!

I have felco at the moment with my pair being 25 years old and going strong after I got them at a car boot sale for £2. The pair I found would have been many times the price of new felco. So much that I can never justify buying new, and will now not know what I’m missing out on.

    Cutting flat brass bar

If you do give the router a try I’d get a router bit designed for Ali as the edge geometry will be better suited than one made for wood.

    Eh?!

Had similar with UPS for secret Santa- dropped it at there location, was collected but not scanned by driver, so vanished from all tracking, until a fair while later and having got quite far through the claims process, it gets delivered. Was a relief it showed up but when stuff vanishes from...

    PM-V11 or A2 blades.

What are you hoping to get from a different steel? Or put another way, what is the current blade struggling with?

    Cutting flat brass bar

Ah the picture helps. For a small bandsaw you’d be looking at a portaband and something like a swag table to mount it. A fair chunk of change needed. If you were feeling brave a well jigged set up and templates could work with a router dialled to low and tooling designed for aluminium. Would be...

    Cutting flat brass bar

Hacksaw and a file would be quick enough If using a metal cutting bandsaw then match the radius to the blade spec, if a wood bandsaw then id use a hacksaw

Analysis paralysis: Should I cut a board only to edge joint it again?

I’d make the three x shapes with halvings and then join them all together . That way you’ve jointed the boards as you go. If you make a 350 wide board how are you going to then make the x? Three 117mm x shapes solves 2 challenges at once

Vertical metal cutting benchtop band saw for hobby use

It’s a 1/4inch 14/18 varitooth in m42 For thin stuff you don’t get any real benefit from a wider saw blade, and being a smaller saw it’s much easier to tension a narrower blade. Not sure of height would guess just under a metre from cab

Vertical metal cutting benchtop band saw for hobby use

What will you be cutting? I use mine mostly for tool steel and stainless steel up to 4mm thick so nothing that puts too much strain on it. Here’s a pic for reference- the drive system is in the cabinet below so would need a bit of a rejig to bench mount it, but doable with a bit of tinkering...

Vertical metal cutting benchtop band saw for hobby use

I have a startrite volante which works really well- some of the challenge with being bench top will be space for the speed control pulleys Portaband and swag table is the other option that lots use

    Angle grinders, managing vibration

Metabo Wepba grinders are better than most for minimising vibration- spendy compared to a regular one though

    Hard and Exotic wood suppliers

Ah isca woodcraft, they have some smaller pieces more suited to turning, the occasional larger offcut but I wouldn’t travel too far. I’m in Cardiff and don’t know anywhere but intrigued to find out all the same. I’ve used the following online suppliers for pieces...

    Hard and Exotic wood suppliers

That’s a shame, they didn’t used to stock it but would be able to order in, had a book under the counter with prices.

Nick’s timber in Gloucester used to be able to source most stuff. Out of interest what’s the place in Cardiff?
