Nice one, Mike. It's important for magazines to talk about products, because that's where the change and the news is, and it's important to help readers with their purchases. Products are what drive most magazines, not necessarily because of the advertising, but because ultimately it is the...

    Radiator Covers

My parents had a furniture business (and yes I've recaned many Habitat chairs in my time). The staples only held the cane temporarily, and you never saw the holes. There may be a better way of doing it, but it worked for us for decades, for furniture being sold to Harrods, Heals etc... Cheers Nick

I presume then you know all about routing out a groove, wetting the cane, making some wooden tools to force the cane into the groove, stapling the cane temporarily to the frame, then pushing solid rattan into the groove with glue, then it tightens as it dries and you can remove the staples and...

    Steam bending walnut and pear

I'd tend to favour laminating for both walnut and pear. Pear used to be made for delicate bedroom chairs, and is beautifully creamy in texture, but I suspect the curved legs were cut from solid rather than bent, following curved grain direction wherever possible. It's great to hear of both...

    Radiator Covers

I agree about TVR valves outside. I've done radiator covers with cane, and can explain the technique if you're interested. Cane is relatively cheap and works well once you've mastered the technique. You can paint it or stain it. Cheers Nick

    Mini router bit?

I've got ones from Proxxon. I can't remember how extensive the range is, but they have a cute mini router that is great for miniature work. You should be able to find out more at brimarc.com Cheers Nick

    Speaker Designer seeks cabinet maker

Hi Great designs. We're not far from Oxfordshire, so if there's anything we can do to help please email me at the link below. I have a fair number of contacts with people who might be able to help. If you haven't seen British Woodworking, I can send you a copy (as I will do for anyone who...

Hi Tony You make some very fair comments about the honing guides piece. In trying to do something different it doesn't always work perfectly. I was trying to give a considered idea of what sort of person might want to use any of the honing guides, and if the Eclipse holds up for everyone. They...

You've hit upon another frustration when you mention the jewellery box. Projects! From all the research I've done over the years I've concluded that a tiny tiny percentage of readers actually make the projects featured in a magazine. My aim is to provide a few smaller projects and jigs that...

This is very interesting. I support Andy King entirely. He is a fantastic tester, and if I want to find out what to buy I will view his tests. That's not just honour amongst thieves: I know that Andy tests things as rigorously as he can and gives an honest opinion. At British Woodworking we've...

Hi Wizer I have thought of providing electronic material. It's one of the many, many things I need to resolve, and it's frustrating that there are so many things we could provide but can't yet. Sadly there are only so many hours in the day, but we will get there, eventually. As on another...

All very good points Alan. There should be fewer magazines. When we bought Traditional Woodworking and relaunched it as British Woodworking (a completely new mag really), I thought for a moment that the biggest favour I could do for the woodworking market would be to close and go away. But...

I agree with everything you say, Johnny. Email me your postal address and I'll send you a copy of British Woodworking for free. That offer's open to anyone who hasn't seen the magazine before. We aim to celebrate British furniture styles, British furniture makers and British toolmakers while...

How can we compete in the UK? This is a fantastic deal, and Popular Woodworking is a great mag. See my comment on the other thread about magazines at the moment! Cheers Nick

I think it's a bit harsh to describe all UK tests as 'bilge'. Have you read all the ones in British Woodworking? We did one on table routers a few issues ago which was as objective as you can get. It takes a lot of time to do so, but it was an effort to test objectively, not so much to drop the...

I agree that the Internet has changed the game. The forum performs a hugely valuable service in providing advice and discussion on topics that magazines could never do in their old ways. When I first edited Woodworker, 20 years ago, we were inundated by questions and had a huge panel of experts...

Hi All I'm sure Wood School will happen again, soon. Just a bit of a hiatus. Simon has been doing other things. Actually we're not really looking for an apprentice, but someone already well skilled who wants to run a furniture business from our workshops. Sorry about the table, Wizer. I did...

Mechanism for Raising Router Table Top?

I think you'll find that the smaller Triton is even better in the table than the larger one. I can't seem to see anything wrong with the small one for hand-held work either. Cheers Nick

Mechanism for Raising Router Table Top?

I agree. The height adjustment on the Triton is superb, with speed adjustment and fine adjustment. It is a fantastic package. The Festool 2200 collet protrudes well through the base (though I need to run down to the workshop to check by how much). The amazing Festool ratchet system takes some...
