Not quite a Roubo work bench

The bench is looking good and that thickness top looks quite suitable to the scale of it. I also think that with those big tenons it will likely be solid enough. Regards John

    Old planer set up.

Sorry no Idea on the maker. Does look like they are grease filled bearings so its an old machine. Does it have a fence? Pretty hard to joint edges without a fence. That said it has potential. I used an old 50tes combo saw/planer for many years. 1 Kw will be plenty power but it would be an idea...

Not quite a Roubo work bench

Nice to see you are going the hand tool road. 2'' of oak will make a good enough bench top but will need a more supporting under carrage than the usual Roubo plan of the legs morticed into the top. A couple of cross members at the top will do that. Something along this design. The tops of the...

    Mechanical pencil alternative

I have almost always used wood pencils. Buy a new box when I am down to the last couple. I also keep a few of the wide flat joiners pencils around for less accurate tasks. I did try a propelling pencil for a few days but kept loosing it. I know lost pencils turn up again but I could not work...

Advice needed: foul water seeping from neighbour's house into my subfloor

You may also be doing them a good turn by making the landlord fix the problem. Its likely not smelling great under their floor either. Regards John

    Thoughts on this.

That was my gut feeling also. In fact I find most sanding machines spin too fast. I mostly use a disc on my lathe because I can pick a slow speed for it. Regards John

Downside to Buffing Edges to Sharpen

I had this guy In the shed a couple of years ago because I left the window open. Dont think anything was eaten. I felt guilty evicting him so built a nest box. As to why the mice eat the buffing stick there is likely wax or a vegetable oil in the in it. Still cant be doing them much good...

    Marking Gauge advice

The sliding bar on that one is very short. I would slide the sliding bar with its pin out and just use it as a single pin gauge like others have said for this job. It is good to have a few gauges to use as each one can be set for a particular setting. Its hard to get back to the exact same...

    New Router Plane

It looks nice and shiney with plenty of twiddly bits. It likely works as well as any router plane but I cant see it being any better as there is only so much a router plane will do. I will stick with my old stanley. That has 3 blades by the way not 2 so for something that supposedly does...

    [Beginner] Chamfering dog holes

Apart from a light rub round the rim with sandpaper I never chamfered the holes in my bench. The theory being that the dog or holdfast would be supported right up to the surface. Regards John

Is this old grinder worth keeping?

Both those grinders look to be worth keeping. In fact the wet grinder looks quite good. The wet wheel looks like its not done a lot of work and that rest on it should be fine for most of your needs. The gray wheel on it looks good too and just needs to be derssed. The other machine I would...

    cleaning router bits

Oven cleaner. Leave it on for a bit to disolve the gunk then wipe off or stiff brush if required . Same goes with tablesaw blades. Acetone and some thinners can work at times but tend to evaporate before the job is done. Regards John

The don't make stuff/timber/lumber like they used to

I have made a few tool handles with mulberry and find it turns really well. The handle on that press is mulberry as is my vice handle and a few chisel handles. Not only is it good to turn it is great for handles in general. Regards John

Great work. Good to preserve an old house like that. Regards John

    Sizing an Axe handle

It's a hammer handle you need like a few others have pointed out. An axe head socket is quite slender so an axe shaft will not fit that. Its got a home made look to it and may be like Tom said and forged from an old ball peen. A roofers hatchet/hammer usually had a notch for pulling nails...

Need a fence for an old Meber bandsaw

Another option to consider. I built one some years ago and find it is better than the factory fence that came with the saw. universial bandsaw fence - Video Search Results Regards John

Post a photo of the last thing you made

That a great job seeing as you did not have a router. I used rubber sink plugs in mine and filled them in with silicone. 15 years on and still going fine. You do have to go easy using them and use the tailstock for support when you can. Regards John
