Sorry if I gave the wrong impression. I was not suggesting that a single GTL plane was worth much and I picked mine up as part of a job lot. The tool kit I was talking about was a complete hand tool set in its original chest so the collectors were hovering. That CB uke was a couple of years ago...

    aftermarket replacement drill driver batteries

I have got replacement batteries on Ebay a few times. You can find batteries for just about anything. Do a search for the model you require. They will have the model numbers that the battery will be compatible with. Read all the blurb to be sure it matches the tool and your charger. You can also...

    vintage chisels

With vintage chisels its likely to be good steel if it has Sheffield stamped on it. Most old British chisels will be good quality. As to squaring up mortice ends that are routed its actually quicker to round the corners of the tenon with a rasp instead. Regards John

I have one of those in the #3 size. It works not too bad after I gave the basics a going over. GTL made tools for the handyman back in the 1930tes. I saw a whole tool kit for sale on Ebay a few years back but the asking price was thousands. I use it a fair bit. Not as refined as my Stanley #3...

    Which chuck for new turner

I dont know the lathe but there are thread adapters to fit chucks to different lathes. You need to identify the thread on your headstock then get the right adapter to marry the chuck to your lathe. Just did a google and it comfirms Mark.B. that the thread is 3/4'' x 16tpi. Also noted that its a...

I have just bought some weird-looking planes

I have a few continental horned planes and they actually work well. Never seen plastic handled ones however. The single iron one will make a good scrub plane. You can use a rasp and sandpaper to make the rear handle fit your hand and be more comfortable. I could live with the dark handled one...

How flat is a piece of glass?

Any planes I have flattened I did on the cast iron top of the tablesaw. May not be to the nearest thou but flat enough. I know that wont flex. Regards John

    Which Plywood for Bed Slats

I thought the whole idea of slats was to allow the underside of the mattress to breathe. Regards John

    Doorstop

I have a few tins of rusty old nails and screws that I just can't chuck out for some strange reason. Good to know there is a real use for them now. Regards John

    Which Plywood for Bed Slats

What ply used will not make as much difference as the difference between ply and solid wood. I would first check how bendy it is for the width its going to span. Ply will sag more than solid wood as half the layers have the grain running crosswise. Regards John

Flip top mitre saw work bench. Looking for tips and ideas. TIA

Built in mitersaw stands have become the in thing on youtube woodworking but the mitersaw takes up a fair bit of room if its in a fixed position. Wherever it is there has to be room for the sliding arms. Flipped over it still takes up space. I have found that I like the folding metal stand for...

    Oregon pine

I dont think the wood smell will affect the taste of salt or pepper to the point of putting people off. That said pine is kind of on the soft side for salt and pepper grinders and to be honest is not a great turning wood. It can be done but would not be my pick for grinders. Regards John

    Slingshots

I did a fair bit of rabbit shooting as a lad growing up in Scotland but it was for the pot. No way you will make much of a dent in the population whatever you shoot them with. They do taste nice and the odd couple for the pot is some consolation. If you are going to shoot some then aim to be as...

Do you make angle cuts often? I mean anything other than the common mitre cuts for skirting or tapers for table legs?

I do most angled cuts on the tablesaw and with a good sharp blade the cut face is fine for glueup. Things like mitered corners and uke and guitar necks. My mitersaw is only a cheap one and while fine for skirting and architraves does not have the precision for finer work. A few jigs and a well...

    Luthier Tools

Like the rest are saying if you are already a woodworker then you have most of what you need toolwise. I did treat myself to a Pax fret cutting saw with depth stop but they can be cut with a dovetail saw of the right kerf. Another thing not mentioned yet is clamps and making instruments...
