    Parkside lathe....

I have seen parting tools made from a bit of saw blade but that tool is neither fish nor fowl. What he has made is a really small scraper. Dont know why as he scrapes with all the other tools. Afraid the guy's turning knowhow kind of matches that lathe. Regards John

    Sad news

You'r second paragraph more or less sums up what I was getting at. We dont always know when a blank will come apart but we should be aware that it can happen. Risk assess each job and try as much as possible to keep out of the line of fire. Regards John

    Are these books any good?

Get down to you'r local library. Borrow, read and put back. Secondhand book shops are another good source. Over the years I have read hundreds of woodwork books. Some better than others. Its always good to see what others are doing. A big trap is to be told that so and so is the master and only...

    Gout 😥

Had a couple of attacks. First time was worst. I was at work and the pain was getting worse as the day went on. Early afternoon I arranged to see a doctor and had to drive home. Using the brake pedal was murder. I have to say the medication works well and its gone in a day. My doctor gives me a...

    Sad news

Always sad for those involved and a huge loss for their loved ones. For the rest of us it's a lesson to keep in mind when operating woodworking machines. Operating other things as well the car is likely the biggest killer on the planet. Regards John

    Improved hand tool myth.

Them were the days! After a hard day sanding it was off for fish & chips. If its that good why do budgies like sandpaper in the floor of the cage. Thats rough! I cant answer this one Regards John

    Parkside lathe....

Cozzer As Phil says see about going along to your local woodturning club or perhaps a men's shed for some advice. Quite often they also have the lowdown on stuff coming up for sale and where to scrounge bits of wood in the locality. Regards John

    Parkside lathe....

If it's this one then I would give it a miss. Parkside Wooden Lathe Test - YouTube Its basically a toy. A plastic one at that. A lathe needs to be good and solid for any chance of success. Also look for one that has morse tapers in the head and tailstocks so you can get other bits and pieces to...

    Tail Vise why dovetails?

Not just end vices. When I made this printing press I could not think of a more practical way to do it. Actually when you think about it it's just a vice but not attached to a bench. Regards John

    Buffing Danish Oil

I had not taken our different seasons into account but even here in winter I find D O takes too long to dry. Ok if your workshop is heated. Regards John

    Steel rules

A ruler can be a bit out and not matter as long as it's the only one used on the project. School woodwork basics. Having said that I have cursed a bit for not always following that good advice. Rulers and tape measures are at times not getting along with each other. Regards John

Are Scheppach HM254 mitre saws all the same quality depending where you buy them.

I dont think any miter saw has good dust collection. Regards John

Gluing - how long to leave clamped

I am a bit concerned about the table leg having the grain running through rather than along. It will have very poor resistance to sideways forces and could snap off if say dragged as tables often are. I guess a short coffee table leg if kept on the chunky side may work but I would not go there...

New Woodworking Job (Career Change) Advice?

My first job after leaving school was in a place that made wooden fish boxes. It was also a sawmill. Logs in one door and boxes out the other end. It was never boring as there were so many steps to the process and I quite liked it. On the nailing machines it was like a competition with all us...

    Tail vice

There are quite a few ways to do it and of course how traditional you want to be. Here are a couple to start with. selfmade wooden Tail Vise, Workbench Part III - YouTube 010 Tail vise for my woodworking workbench. TOOLMAKE19 - YouTube My tail vice was an afterthought but as I had a spare...

    Newel post repair

I will go with what the others are saying about a sturdy dowel repair. If it goes deep onto each section epoxy will hold it. I would suspect there is already either steel or wood pins in there from the first repair so take the top parts off first. If those pins then come out clean you should...
