    Workbench

Functionally there is not much between the two. I cant see the Axminster being any better than the SIP to be honest as both have pretty flimsy leg arrangements. They both look like they will wrack too much for handplane work as they are. One easy way to stiffen them up would be to box in the...

    Small Wooden Mallet

Good advice above. I really cant see why any woodworker needs to buy a mallet. Fair enough when you are first starting out and I admit I bought one to start with. After a few years I was finding it a bit limiting but really not much else I could buy so just made one. After the first one then you...

    Old Pump Restoration.

Nice work on that pump. Should be good for the next hundred years. Regards John

    New (old) honing guide

Shows that some value can be found in old cars. Never could see any value in Bridge City Tools however. Regards John

    New (old) honing guide

One of my son's mates bought a car for $50 just after leaving school. Still had a few months to go before it was due inspection so thought it was worth the price. When he came to give it a good clean out he found over $20 in coins that had been lost down the seats. Regards John

    Two bowls from one blank?

I was lucky enough to find a secondhand McNaughton set about 10 years ago. There is only so much you can do with the strait cutter and I seldom use it. It will get further in than a parting tool however as the tool is captured and has way more leverage. The curved tools save so much more wood. I...

    Chopping boards

Made an oak cutting board about 45 years ago not knowing any better and because I had an offcut. Never had any health problems and still using it. Gets a scrub in the sink after each use and dries on the dish rack. I have read that wood boards hold less bacteria than plastic ones. Regards John

    Newbie bandsaw question

Have to agree with the above post. Smooth clean cuts are not what a bandsaw is for. Sure you can go for more tooth count but then you can only cut thinner material. You can perhaps refine the cut some by better saw set up but as said it will never be like a planed cut. While on the subject of...

    Moxon vice cost?

I made this one for nothing. As ajs said they are better made to clamp on top of the bench than being built in. The point being to raise the work to a more comfortable working height. Regards John

Another what is this tool request

Think this the closest call so far. Looks pretty much the same thing. Peppa pig will be having nightmares. Regards John

Another what is this tool request

I really dont know what it is other than its for chopping or splitting something. I will just make a few observations to try narrow things down. The back looks like it has been hammered so is that use or misuse. A flensing cutter would have attached to a long wood handle so likely would have...

    New (old) honing guide

I do most of my sharpening freehand but the jig still gets some use to restore the primary bevel. Dammit there I go sucked into a sharpening discussion. Regards John

    New (old) honing guide

Nice but what about chisels and blades without the slot. I guess stanley were only worried about their own blades. Bit of a one trick pony so I will stick with my old eclipse. Regards John

Compound sliding /mitre saw accurate cuts

If you want to cut multiple parts the same length then use a stop block. As the others have said measure from the side of the blade (outmost tooth edge). Stop block can be as simple as a bit of wood and a clamp. I looked at a few clips before finding this guy using a stop safely. You dont want...

Axminster HBS350N Hobby 14” Bandsaw (older) versus Axminster AC2305B Craft 12" (newer)

OK bigger machine more power there is your answer. Also I kind of favor the bearing guides. They do ware out but they are cheap and easy to replace. Regards John

Gluing - how long to leave clamped

That looks to be chunky enough. Dont see it being a problem. Has a nice grain pattern going on. Would like to see a pick of the finished item. Regards John

Axminster HBS350N Hobby 14” Bandsaw (older) versus Axminster AC2305B Craft 12" (newer)

Bigger is usually better but horsepower has to be considered also. What is the power of the older saw? Regards John
