Post a photo of the last thing you turned

That one really looks good. Pretty impressed you managed it on that little record lathe. Regards John

Advice sought: resurfacing an old workbench.

That would be a very good way to do it and a top layer of ply would only be required if the existing top has got too thin to be viable. Regards John

Advice sought: resurfacing an old workbench.

Without seeing the benchtop its a bit hard to say but generally its best to get the existing surface flat as a starting point. Other option is remove the top and perhaps use 2 layers of ply as a replacement. Other sheet goods would do so depends what you have. MDF is usually very flat and...

    Wood store advice and ideas.

I would be mindful of just how much weight you hang from the roof as the frame is only designed to hold the roof up. A few lengths of wood is fine but dont overdo it. Serious weight will require support from below. Regards John

Best way to cut a 3mm sliver on a bandsaw?

Like others are suggesting is just plane it. Its possible to do with a real sharp blade and a well set up saw but with a very fine skim like that there is a chance it will wander and spoil the piece. You will have to finish off with a plane in any case so just gauge a line and plane down to it...

    Black & Decker smoothing plane

Its a modern attempt at a Stanley No 10. Big rebate plan if you like as well as being a bench plane. Have to admit I never knew B&D did hand planes either. Regards John

Gluing Green Oak Board (to make a wide board!)

Yes its the green aspect for me too. With dry wood and waterproof glue it would be the way to go. That said if your board is quarter sawn or close to then it would not need that treatment. Regards John

Looking to buy a block plane

I have the Quangsheng low angle too and of the 3 block planes I have its the best for end grain. The others are a Stanley 130 that I bought as it looked unusual being double ended. It works but a No 3 is a better option as it has a nice handle and the same size sole. The last is a no name copy...

    Colletiere a Charavine crossbow

You got there in the end. Like you suspect it may well have been backed with sinew. The later Germanic crossbows were heavily sinewed. There are lots of other backings as well although they simply prevent the back of the bow splitting. Rawhide was used and various natural fibers. I have had...

    Chuck?

My first lathe was a DML 24 and I did plenty handles and drilling on it without a chuck. That said a chuck is handy to have and I did get one after a few months. I still mostly do handles between centers as I just got used to it. To drill mounted between centers I first rough to round then put...

new Axminster spiral cutter portable thicknesser

I was not implying there is anything wrong with the machine only that there should be TCT cutters available down the track and would be a good option when the first set of HSS cutters go blunt. Far as I know those small cutters cant be reground. This video is of an almost identical machine and...

new Axminster spiral cutter portable thicknesser

TCT cutters would last many times longer than HSS so I would be asking if they can provide those and of course the cost of them. It is not a true helical head as those have the cutters mounted at an angle to give a sheering cut and they are usually TCT 4 sided. Similar machines are sold here in...

    Cutting Plastic

A bandsaw may be better than the tablesaw and less likely to heat up and melt the plastic. I cut the odd small bit of plastic on the bandsaw now and then. I would try a test piece as others have mentioned to see if its practical. Regards John

Tool chest, tools cabinet or plane till?

A lot depends on how you like to work. I find open shelves where I can see the most used tools makes it quick and easy to reach the tool you want. The down side is they are less protected from the environment than if they are in a closed chest or cabinet. Available space is another thing to have...

101 uses for a hot melt glue gun.

Actually first time I used hot melt was to stick metal arrow heads on to wood shafts. Used a hot air gun as at the time I did not have a hot melt gun. I think most fletchers used the same. Since then I have used it to mount things on jigs, Routing templates and to stick some pickups in...

Carpet Tiles in a Workshop - Thoughts (Good or Bad Idea?)

If you are set on using carpet tiles then I would not glue them down. There is no need to and in fact I have never seen them glued down. Spill something as is likely to happen then just whip up the affected tiles for a wash and replace when dry. Most office buildings use them and they are...
