    Just seen this

Looks like a good idea. It does a good job at jointing. I also thought it was a big cutter for that router but if you are only taking a plane like shaving depth of cut I guess you can get away with it. It may be the answer for some with limited tool collections but the basics of hand plane...

    Etsy con

There would be few of us making any money out of woodworking let alone a living wage. To those that do I say well done because they have really grafted to get there. I have made things for people after a price has been agreed but mostly they recoil at just the price of the wood so I have never...

    Moravian workbench build

A vice fitting thread would be good and I am sure gentlemen like ourselves would keep the discussions polite. Over the years I have had the vice mounted proud (because thats easier to do) and flush. I will be staying with flush as it makes handling longer boards so much easier. Regards John

    It's all about the angles...

I tatally agree it is very skillful but I still wonder why not apply that skill to something more high end. Apprentice pieces come to mind. Kind of a solid 3D CV .apprentice-pillar-fact-sheet.pdf Regards John

    It's all about the angles...

The skill level required to pull that off would be first class but its kind of a big showoff and definitely not practical woodwork. Going the wow factor on a bit of nice furniture is one thing but thats a trestle. Still different strokes for different folks. Regards John

    Problems?

Not something I have turned but with sharp tools and the right approach it should be doable. The branches tend to come out like spokes from a wheel all at the same level so a lot of turners use that as a feature. That means you will be cutting hard and soft wood as the thing spins. Its basically...

    Moravian workbench build

Plenty of opinions on tool wells and split tops every time the questions get asked. My first bench had a well and unless you are very disciplined it gets filled up with c#@p. My current final bench, while not Moravian is knock down and split top. Both great features. I can happily get by without...

Titan 2000w 40cm chainsaw. Anyone used one?

I cant comment on the saw itself as I have only ever had petrol saws so my comment is on sharpening. For many years I cut all my own firewood so have sharpened a lot of chains. I found the power sharpeners do a good job but take too much metal off so the chain does not last long. File by hand is...

    Castor Spacing for Moveable Cabinets

My thoughts too execpt he just said it better than I could. Only other thing I would add is is that anything that you are going to work on like a bench or assembly table will be better to work on if the feet are on the floor when working so perhaps look at jack up wheels to move it. There are a...

I read about that the other day. Most impressive structure. Had me wondering where the price of pine goes from here. Regards John

    Questionable circular saw adaptation

For a long time construction carpenters have been using chainsaws as a circ saw can only cut a couple of inches deep. That attachment lets you make deep cuts a bit more accurately than a standard chainsaw would. There is also a hand held bandsaw to shape the ends of big beams. Mafell Z5Ec 12"...

    Newbie woodturner oldie tinkering woodworker

I also think that's the best book to get you started. When I got my first (secondhand) lathe that book was in the box of chisels that came with it. A safe and practical approach to turning. Regards John

    Wooden plane for xmas

Looks like a nice smoother. I have to admit that for more than half my woodworking life I avoided them as setting them up just looked too difficult but spend a few hours practicing taking different thickness shavings and the penny will drop. They are a joy to use. These days I have as many...

    Bowyers flote

As you look like the only person thats used one I have to ask are the blades like a card scraper with a burr and is it possible to sharpen them? Regards John

    Bowyers flote

Thanks for putting that up Tom. Used to be floats were the tool used by plane makers and us lesser woodworkers got by with a rasp. I have never owned a float but a rasp and card scraper I have used in bow making. That said a lot of old woodworking tools faded out of use with the arrival of sawn...

    Bowyers flote

I have made a few bows and have read all the go to books on bow making like the Bowyers Bible vol 1 to 4, the Longbow plus many others. None show that tool so suspect it was not widely used. Simple card scrapers get plenty mention and are almost essential. Someone back then must have liked it a...
