Nest Box out of oak: to oil or not?

Silicone sealant would probably hold it in place without the need for nails.

    Wildlife camera.

I use trail cameras a lot at work for surveying, security etc. You definitely do get what you pay for in terms of image quality, shutter speed, battery life etc etc etc. If you get one with a removable SD card, get the biggest SD card you can afford and you'll have to change it less often...

Help with fencing (not the type using swords!)

20+ years ago they used to treat fence posts with preservative that actually worked. When I started as a student I was told the lifespan of well erected stock fencing was 50 years. You are lucky to get 5 years out of the ***** we get today.

    Wood ID

That's all willow. Mike is right. You shouldn't have taken it. If it's a large forest in Essex my guess is it is owned by the City of London. Wood theft happens all the time and I have known it to be enforced. That could have been left to dry to be sold as biomass, more likely though it...

    can I cut ...

I stalk deer for a living. All antler is most certainly bone. Amazing to thing that they cast them annually and then regrow them in the space of a couple of months. The next time you see a picture of a gert red stag just think that that bone weighs more than the bone in your legs and it took...

    Wine making -elderflower

I make elderflower wine most years, I much prefer to ferment it out and prime champagne bottles to make it sparkling. Then leave it in the bottles for a year. Whatever you do be meticulous with your hygeine/sterilisation.

    How long in a queue?

I have been managing to keep us fed using our local corner shop which, apart from a couple of occasions over the last couple of weeks has remained fully stocked with more or less everything we needed. Except pasta. Am I missing something? Did the news say that pasta was the vaccine? Trouble is...

I haven't observed that behaviour from Barn Owls. But that's not to say they wouldn't do it. I habe pretty minimal knowledge of owls and birds of prey. Tawny and Little owls I have seen on the ground.

Are you seriously looking for a job in deer management/conservation?

It's likely another species of Owl. Tawny, long eared, little owl. Could even still be a Barn owl. They have a massive range of calls, some of them you wouldn't believe came from an animal.

Shooting and poisoning will have had an effect but the loss of a major food source was massive in their decline. They are the original shitehawks for a reason. My experience is definitely with the minority of nests on a national scale granted. Yes I have worked with reds in East Anglia as...
