Will I get the wrinkles out of this veneer with an iron?

Are you going to be using the veneer straight away? Are you going to be laying it down with scotch?

    Stripped pine: colour matching

Hi Paul, It looks like you have pine frames and tulip wood panels. The only way of getting a close match would be to sand heavily all over to remove all residues then ( A+B ) bleach the tulip wood panels to remove the greenish grey tint. You will then have to adjust the colour with a stain or...

    Stripped pine: colour matching

Hi Paul, I think the pink colour will be the residue of a primer. It can only be removed by applying stripper and scrubbing with a corse wire wool (2 grade) then sanding, probably starting with 100 grit and then 150 and finishing with 240. It is likely your doors will still not match your...

Recommendations for a finish for Ash furniture

If you are going to use Rustins Plastic Coating for the tops, why not use it all over? I know you said you want a satin finish for the bases but you could always dull it down with some wire wool and wax once it has cured.

Filling-in / sanding back over a mother of pearl inlay

Firstly you will need to seal the fracture in your MOP to stop any dirt getting into it. I would use some epoxy mixed with a little Titanium White, work it into the fracture and when dry sand it off. For filling I would use both fine dust from your blackwood and mix some earth pigment into the...

    Help !

Hi Aurelio It seems as though they have stopped making it but these people in the USA may still have some http://www.hofcraft.com/goddards-furnit ... leaner.htm If you cannot get any more of this wax you may want to consider a microcrystalline wax which was developed for The British Museum in...

    Logs Poem

Beechwood fires are bright and clear If the logs are kept a year, Chestnut's only good they say, If for logs 'tis laid away. Make a fire of Elder tree, Death within your house will be; But ash new or ash old, Is fit for a queen with crown of gold Birch and fir logs burn too fast Blaze up bright...

    Flour Emery

Hi All, thank you for all your suggestions, I found an old fashioned abrasives supplier in Gloucester and bought a 25KG sack of flour emery from them. It is a bit greyer than the one I have been using but will do the job. It is on the right in the photo below. As I have more than I will ever...

    Royal lac finish

Mignal is right in what he says, shellac is a tough and durable finish if left to cure. It falls short if it comes into contact with solvents or water but that, as I said earlier, is easily restored which can't be said of lacquers. I french polished dining tables for family thirty years ago and...

    Royal lac finish

Peter, what are your skill levels re finishing? can you fad up and spirit off or do you tend to brush on and then cut and buff? I ask because it can make a difference as to the shellacs you can use.

    Royal lac finish

Peter I am a little sceptical about the claims for this polish. If it is new to the market, how do they know it will not crack in time? Resin type finishes need feeding periodically with a wax otherwise they dry out and start to crack and flake. There are advantages and disadvantages to all...

    Which Hardwood and Supplier?

Hi Tony, as others have said some softwoods are quite hard and some hardwoods quite soft ( balsar wood is a hardwood) so you are best to pick woods that have been recommended. One thing that is a good idea to do when practicing dovetails is to use contrasting colours of timber, a light one for...
