Oak and Iroko Utility Worktop Finish

I would be inclined to use good old fashioned oil based varnish, it is very waterproof and hard wearing. PU is also waterproof and hard wearing but if it starts to crack and peel...and it always does you will have little option but to strip it off and start again. With varnish you will just need...

    Help - Bleach Damage

I think your only option is to sand the area back until you get below the bleached stain. Then re-apply some osmo to that area, when cured cut it back flat with 400 grit then wire wool ('0000') and wax the whole top. If that is not successful I'm afraid the only option will be to cut the whole...

    Wet/dry on roll

This company is really good. A few years ago I got three rolls of Wet n Dry from them by mistake, it was very good quality. If you register with them they give out discount codes on a regular basis so if you are not in a hurry it is worth waiting for. Their website is awful though so probably...

    What solvent

I use the hot air gun to remove mine. If you have one just hold it a few inches from the disc, moving it around slowly over the top section of the disc then peel the disc off slowly moving the gun down as you do. The disc should peel off leaving no glue residue at all.

    Bowl Finish

If this is a bowl that is not going to be used for foodstuff, I would firstly seal with white shellac sanding sealer, when dry de-nib and wax with a Microcrystalline wax such as Renaissance Wax Polish or Chestnut Microcrystalline Wax.

Rich Mahogany Finish on New Mahogany

Hi Karen. Looking at the photo of the original camera I would say it is Brazilian Mahogany. I can see whiteish flecks in the grain which would indicate the grain has been filled with plaster of paris, a method used from about 1880 through to the 1930's. You have been given lots of advise on...

A bookcase on hinges - is it feasible?

Hi Rob. Do you actually want it to be a bookcase or do you want it to look like a bookcase? If you want a secret style door you would be better off using faux book spines like these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-rvxYU ... lBookWorks http://www.ukhomeinteriors.co.uk/content/bookspines.php...

Tongue and groove on a shed? How to fix them?

The suitability of T&G for shed building aside, I have just spent the last two weeks laying down T&G floorboards, both chipboard and engineered oak and I used these screws https://www.screwfix.com/p/tongue-tite- ... 7QodkuwCkw They are fantastic, drive home easily with no splitting and if the...

    the blackest black

I would be inclined to use blackboard black, once dry it can be sanded dead flat with a bit of elbow grease. The only thing to look out for if you are interested in trying it is some blackboard blacks are actually dark grey so you will have to check first. You can also buy it in a rattle...

    Gold paint

Gold paint will always turn dull and green because it is mostly made with brass powder. Have you considered oil (mordant) gilding? If you have not tried it before, it is really quite easy and you will get much better results.

    Removing gloss

My method of dulling is to use pumice powder applied with a good quality old clothes brush but you can also apply it with a sponge or a soft cloth. Pumice comes in different grades like wire wool which for some reason suppliers not longer state on the packs so for instance Fiddes pumice is...

    Woodworking vice linings

You could make several cheeks to line your jaws, with leather, cork or rubber mounted on wood or MDF but instead of screwing or bolting them in you can use rare earth magnets, that way you can have linings to suit the job in hand and you will not need to take the vise off to replace the fixed jaw.

Yew Swine - how to unbend a bookcover...?

Rob is right, it will need to be veneered ( something straight grained ) on the inside with the grain at 90° to the front cover.
