Masks and Specs and Beards and Shopping

Well, I have exhausted all types of mask and face coverings as well as putting surgical tape over the top of the mask and nothing worked so I have gone back to contact lenses. I have tried contacts on about four or five occasions over the past twenty five years and given up on them each time but...

    BBC The Repair Shop polish

Lijongtao, if you can let me know which episode it is I will have a look and see if I can work out what he is using, but the process he would have been using would have been edited so they probably missed out a few stages! On making your own shellac I would say no it is not worth it, buy ready...

    Woodcarving V tool

It looks as though somebody has shaped it for a particular job. I have half a dozen carving chisels with odd shapes some of which I can't even remember why I shaped them like that!

Masks and Specs and Beards and Shopping

Thats not a bad suggestion Rich, I was looking for something easy though! I ordered a snood which arrived yesterday, It was a bit better than the masks but not a total success, my glasses still steamed up. It was however really comfortable to wear and being able to just pop it up was great. I...

    Guilding

I dont know for sure, but I suspect the monks then peel all the gold off and hammer it into new squares to sell again. Theres no such thing as a poor religion. Hahahaha what a scam.

    Guilding

The leaves are 3” square so I just measure by thumb and then add some on. I do usually end up with some leftovers but it never gets wasted.

    Guilding

Practical Gilding by Peter and Ann Mactaggart is a really excellent book if you feel you need to have the information by your side when working. Richard C's advise is good but I think he is talking about using loose leaf when he said the leaf is light. There is more outlay and more skills to be...

    Guilding

Gilding is doable, all I know about acoya is it can attack steel screws. For the gilding you will need to prime, undercoat and top coat in oil based paint. The top coat should be yellow which will help to hide any little imperfections in the gilding. Professional gilders would use a top coat of...

Masks and Specs and Beards and Shopping

The visors are pretty much the same as the visor I wear when turning and that has a tendency to steam up. Maybe its just me I think I might be a naturally steamy person!

I have tried that but I have Zeiss wire frames with varifocal lenses, there is no pulling them forward, as they go out of focus and spring back to where they are supposed to be anyway!

Masks and Specs and Beards and Shopping

Thank you for the suggestion Artie but washing up liquid has quite a lot of salt in it which I think would destroy the coating on my lenses!

    Pigment advice

So Rest Express is the shop, great to know. Sincerely appreciate your lengthy replied and kind help. Rest Express is quite expensive but what they have is a very good selection from all of the polish suppliers. They stock WS Jenkins (my favourite firm) Mylands, Fiddes and Liberon. Thank you Li

    Pigment advice

It is when you get long and end grain together like fiddle back sycamore, and as you move around the piece the light gets absorbed by the end grain and reflected by the long grain creating a 3D effect. Very attractive in lots of timbers but you sometimes get it on antique Mahogany and it can...
