    Try and turn the spindle/chuck/faceplate by hand to make sure the spindle isn't jammed. If it helps turn it take the drive belt off the pulley. Does it have a spindle lock that you have somehow engaged ? you may discover that if the spindle doesn't turn

    Thank you thats very helpful, now I know the length which is important so next step will take chuck to local nuts/bolts etc emporium and see what I can see. The leather pad info is good maybe I will carve a bit off a belt/buckle or cadge a bit from our shoe repairers and push it down the hole
