    Web Site Hosting

In order for a website to be seen, it has to be on a computer that can be 'found' on the internet. It also has to have special software to respond when people ask for the pages of the website. Obviously it is better if the computer is on all the time, and can handle lots of people visiting it...

    Web Site Hosting

I am with the (oft maligned) 1and1. Apart from a glitch transferring one of my domains they have been fine - no down time, speeds higher than my internet connection, and moderately competent support staff. I am only a hobbyist so do not drive the system hard, but I do use ssh to a git repo for...

    photo software

I have installed GIMP on my (works) MacMini (as well as my Linux boxes). Works fine. GImp is very powerful out of the box, and there are plenty of pluggins. I found the learning curve a little steep after PaintShop, but now just keep googling for answers and have managed to do everything I...

Help!..oil warning light on my 61 Clio dci on!!

Oil pools are good.. No, seriously. It means that you lost your oil mostly where you are or close by. No oil and no oil pools means you lost it somewhere else entirely and may have been traveling with little or none. That could be expensive. Let us hope it is a loose sump plug, and that...

Interesting how many folk are put off when confronted with the 'reality'. This is probably more accurate....

best sea towns where to live in England??

A lot will depend upon what else you want. The Exmoor Coast is stunning, but has few opportunities for well-paid work, and does not make for easy access to the rest of the country. We love living here (well, just a little east) for the feeling of calm and isolation from the teeming...

Matter of principle. Cancelling T-Mobile contract

Hmmmmm...... If everybody pays the 50p, and they all go to the 'priority' queue, then they will all wait just as long. Of course there may be an option on the priority queue to jump to a higher priority queue. If paying 50p can guarantee a swift response, then they must have some 'spare'...

    Two driving questions

I have been a motorcyclist, but gave it up. I sometimes indicate as suggested, but more often use road position. The roads round here are mostly narrow and wiggly. If I know there is a good space for a bike to overtake, I hog the white line until I reach the overtaking stretch. I then pull...

Thanks for that. You are right - my search was more generic and got lots of irrelevant hits. Now to try to decipher the options......

    USB Transmitter

A long shot, I know, but can anybody point me to a solution. We have a bird box with a USB camera in that we were gifted. Problem is that there are no suitable sites for it where the cable can be routed easily into the house. So is there a battery powered device that will convert the USB...

    Gas regs and responsibility

Thankyou (I think!) For confirming my cynical opinion. I do not think that the strategy you describe is limited to the small traders, though. I phoned GasSafe and the lady listened very politely. The relief in her voice was palpable when she realised the work was done under the CORGI scheme...

    Gas regs and responsibility

The chap failed to call back as promised, so I will try contacting some official bodies today. I thought it fair to try a soft approach first, but suspected an attempted run-around. I agree about the CO monitor - we have one downstairs for the wood burner. I will report back on future...

    Gas regs and responsibility

Excellent idea.... I have never been to that site. I will look at it tomorrow. That would be my favoured solution. However the chap who signed it of (the 'competent person') was a subcontractor for a local firm. The owner of the local firm says that the installer was not on an official job...

    Gas regs and responsibility

The problem with me fixing it is that I do not know what would be a legitimate fix and what would not. I also do not know how to spot other deviations from the regulations. Nightmare scenario is that my fix is still not acceptable, or that the qualified guy finds something else to complain...
