What is this feature in timber?

Thanks Pete, that matches the descriptions, but how did the fungus get all the way into the otherwise undamaged timber? This is from a newly cut plank, must have been a good half inch from the outside of the log and a lot further from the cut ends..... It adds interest but poked my curiosity...

What is this feature in timber?

I am asking about the thin wiggly dark line that ignores the grain. It is not a crack. I have seen several while working with the latest batch of timber. Any information gratefully received..... (Edit: photographing it on a pine table was not the best idea )

Building a car standing - process?

OK, some more thinking going on here. There are some other options. Part of the front of the property further east fronts onto the lane where it is not adopted by the council - it is a private (unowned) track. At this point the slope is lower so technically simpler (and cheaper) to do...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

lovely box. Wish that I could do that. Maybe next time I cut a plank I will aim higher....

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Thanks Cooper - at least I am not the only one.... There's the rub. I am not sure if my technique is up to it yet. I wanted a flat piece to practice carving and got a little carried away. Next time I will try for a bit more accuracy - holding the log is a problem - I use the picnic bench as...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I made a plank today, just a small one. Boy did that make me appreciate the idea of buying ready-sawn timber..... Now I have to figure out hw to thickness it with limited hand-tools......

    Resin 'inlay' on carving?

I knocked up a quick trial on a piece of waste to test the milliput: the contrast is good, there is no colour bleed, and the miliput smooths down quite nicely. Please ignore the wonky outlines - I was hurrying:

Building a car standing - process?

Just measured along the fence line, and there is 7m between the neighbours gate post and the last tree/shrub that can be removed (so the pittosporum goes, but the eleagnus stays. The Rotting Shed back wall lies about 1.75m from the boundary so the whole structure will likely be demolished and...

I even balanced on the chimney to get you a birds-eye view:

The hedge that will be turned into hardstanding, my neighbours drive is to the right.... Standing in my neighbour's drive looking along the hedge. What traffic there is (three households) travels along the tarmac at the bottom of the image. Traffic travels along the tarmac at the top of the...

    Resin 'inlay' on carving?

I tried some milliput black in a quick test (single letter). Works very well. Sticks well too - I sawed the test piece across the letter expecting the filler to break or fall out. It did niether which is a good sign for future use. Thanks for recomending that - It may be the solution.

Building a car standing - process?

That is a possibility; I was going to measure up at the weekend but we had family over and it went out of my head......

Building a car standing - process?

It is steep, partially because the road was built up level at the boundary. Highways would be alarmed to see the state of that ;-) I have a garage on a similar slope further down the track - the steel stilts mean it is about 5m off the ground at the far end. A steel frame, boxed in for storage...

Building a car standing - process?

Thanks for the input folks, all very useful. Sorry for being quiet - had family visiting. We live in a cul-de-sac, four houses, two of which are on the end lane (heading east) which is not managed by the council. The two that do have frontage onto the council-managed portion (one of them me)...

Building a car standing - process?

That is more good advice, Thanks. I need to start asking the authorities, and expecting to spend some drinking vouchers. Is there a way that I can estimate overall costs (very rough estimate would be better than none). If it is going to cost more than 5k I might have to do some reflection...

Building a car standing - process?

Thanks both to Terry and to Jonm. There is a wealth of information to digest there. I had not realised that 'highways' would be involved, but it makes complete sense and seems entirely reasonable. I am too law-abiding (and nervous) to try breaking the rules. Added to which I know that I do...

Building a car standing - process?

Pictures and sketch I can do later..... but for now imagine a rectanglular parking bay narrow side touching the road (there is no pavement here). I can easily allocate enough for 3m wide by 4.5m deep, but the end furthest from the road will have a 2m drop. I could extend by as much as a metre...

    Cordless lawnmower....

I bought a Bosch one to match the Power4All range of other tools that I already had. Negatives: It is expensive, with three cutting heights. Feels a bit tacky/plasticky. Not as high quality as the rest of the tools. Positives: Works well, really light, a lot quieter than petrol, sufficient...

Makes sense - it seems reasonable that such a large alteration might need special consideration.

Building a car standing - process?

Thanks, I had noticed LDCs on the site that you referenced. They certainly look interesting. It is odd that the elevation is based on architecture. My bungalow is a semi - mirror image of the other half originally. One faces east the other west. The lane is North, and I think that, when...
