    Pencils

Seems to me like a stupid and wasteful use of such woods.

    Small Workbench WIP

I'm planning on making a small workbench as well, about 1100mm x 400mm, so thanks for this thread.

WIP: wooden violin maker's thumb planes

I've made wooden thumb planes before but now I'm trying to make a batch of them more quickly. These are for making violins and other musical instruments, and any other fine and detailed work. I only use hand tools. I'll add that I don't use the what seems to be ubiquitous...

    An honourable gentleman...

Seems like it to me as well. The report said it was a donation as well as saying it was 'fine', but surely libraries have a limit for fines, somewhere in region of say £50 or the cost of the book? Sounds like they got together to cook up this fake "news" story.

    Newly made marking knife

Looks good. Is the handle metal? What's the big piece of metal on the right in the first pic? What steel is the blade made from? Tools used?

    How many planes?

I would say the number of households owing a plane is nothing like 1 in 3. My guess would be something like 1 in 100 or even 1 in 200. I don't planes can be compared with screwdrivers. Lots of DIY can be done without the need for a plane whereas if you need to turn a screw you have to use a...

mystery object? Its a Sash Fillister. No, a plough. Thanks

It looks in really clean condition, on the way home from a boot fair?

    How many chisels and gouges?

Here's 5 more, makes a total of 198. I've some more on the way so that'll bring it to over 200. Cleaned with meths and started sanding off the rust: Sharpened and handles oiled: The biggest one is George Barnsley, and apparently they were well known for shoe and leather working tools...

    Charcoal barbecue for heating metal

I was wondering about the use of a hair dryer to add air to the charcoal; can you just hold it over the charcoal so the air from the hair dryer just goes down on to it, or do you need to rig up a pipe to direct the air into the charcoal from underneath?

    Ebay returns

I think that only applies with private sellers, business sellers legally have to pay return postage on a "not as described" item. Correction: both private and business sellers have to pay return postage on a "not as described" item. It's only when the buyer changes their mind that private...

    rip saw

I've got a cheapo hardpoint Lidl hand saw, excellent for cross cutting but very slow and hardly cuts for ripping. I have actually got an old rip saw but haven't got round to using it, probably needs sharpening as well. The cutting action and the shape of the saw teeth for cross cutting and...

    Making a concertina video

What a joke, uses loads of power tools and machines and he still says they're "hand crafted".

    Flattening a plane sole.

I agree that trying to remove convexity by rubbing the plane on a large piece of sandpaper is a problem. But I don't see how is it possible to hold the plane so that only the centre is touching the paper, I think you will rock it whatever you do, and you will either maintain the convexity or...

    Adverts on the BBC

I don't really mind the trailers in between the the programmes, they can be easily ignored, although they are annoying and there seems to be more of them now. What I find really annoying and stupid are the announcements over the end credits of programmes and films. I switch the sound off as...

    Charcoal barbecue for heating metal

Thanks for all the ideas. This looks like a similar set up but using "fire-proof bricks": http://www.instructables.com/id/Folding ... /?ALLSTEPS

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Three wooden thumb planes, made from maple scraps. Only hand tools used, all finishing off the blade or scraper. The blades are made from ground flat stock (gauge plate) 1.5mm thick. I use these for violin making.

    Charcoal barbecue for heating metal

Numpty question: I'm planning on using charcoal to heat steel for hardening, can you just put some charcoal on a suitable container or surface, eg a roasting tray, old frying pan or some bricks? In other words, do I have to use a purpose made barbeque?

Boiled Linseed Oil finish still feels greasy

Unless there's something wrong with the oil, it sounds like there's a layer of oil on top of the wood surface. When you wipe off, you should wipe it like you're wiping it all off, ie all of the oil should soak into the wood and there's no oil floating on the surface.

    basic carving set.... advice needed

    Starter set in John Sainsbury's "Woodworking Shop" Gouges (presumably straight): no 2, 10mm no 5, 10mm no 6, 12mm no 7, 6mm V tool: no39, 6mm veiner: 3mm chisels: 6mm, 25mm I think I would change the no 2, 10mm, which I would have thought is a flat chisel, to a no 3 or 4.

    basic carving set.... advice needed

I would say hang on to them for the moment, unless there's some reason why you have to sell now. As you said, if you don't know exactly what you're going to carve then having a wide variety of tools will give you the most options. Later on after you've done some carving, you'll know which...
